Tutoring review by Orval in New Kensington, PA
Today we did an old AP calculus AB exam. We went over various topics including, implicit differentiation, the fundamental theorem of calculus, average value of a function, average rate of change, first and 2nd derivative tests, and separable differential equations. The student was unaware of how to solve a separable differential equation, so I showed him the algorithm and left some extra practice for him which I will check on Thursday.

Today we continued our discussion of logarithms by looking at three more topics. We started off with learning how to find the inverse of logarithmic and exponential functions. Next we worked on graphing logarithmic equations and figuring out how certain translations affected the base graphs. Finally, we looked at the add-multiply property of exponential functions and how it could be used. Overall the children seemed to understand what was going on, and I left them with homework due next week.

Tutoring review by Kristyn in New Kensington, PA
The first student was working on statistics this week. This included z-scores, normal distributions, and finding the percent in a specified set. She had the most trouble with the last category mainly trying to match less than/greater than questions with the correct distribution on the normal curve. I suggested the student draw a picture for each question and decide if it greater than (1-%) or from a to b (b%-a%). She seems pretty comfortable with the material and should do well on her test. The second student is studying for his unit test. This unit covered volume and surface area for different geometric figures (pyramids, prisms, spheres, cones). He has a very good handle on volume for all shapes. We reviewed the surface area equations and what dimensions are required for each figure. He had some difficulty with surface areas for irregular figures that are made up of multiple figures. The last topic we covered were the ratios for similar figures between dimension length, surface area and volume. Overall he seemed to better understand all his test material and is prepared for his upcoming exam.

Tutoring review by Holly in New Kensington, PA
We reviewed the student's diagnostic testing, and decided to focus on the math section. We discussed overall tips and strategies for not only this section, but for test taking in general. She identified some areas that she wanted to work on within the math section; namely areas and volumes of spheres, as well as understanding and using algebraic functions. She has a great attitude, a wonderful sense of humor, and is eager to learn. We had a very good session and when asked if she felt better about ACT math, she said that she did. She would like to continue focusing on Math over the next week. She has many resources to use to practice questions.
