Tutoring review by Robert in Mount Kisco, NY
Today I met with the student to work on his new Algebra II material. His class is starting to bring everything together, solving arbitrary polynomial equations by using advanced techniques such as synthetic division. He is absolutely more confident since our last meeting and was able to tackle lots of different problems. We focused on each of the techniques and more importantly discussed when we should apply each. The procedure that we developed should save the student time in solving these problems and provide a context that brings all of the techniques together. I am very confident in the student's problem solving skills, and I recommend that he work through randomly chose practice problems to see if he can identify the correct technique as well as solve the problem.

We reviewed his school material regarding solving systems of equations. At the end of the lesson, he knew how to set equations equal to each other and solve for the necessary terms. A high point of the session was that he could apply what we had gone over to word problems. We have been practicing word problems for a few sessions, and this session in particular, he was able to create equations and solve them with minimal help.

We worked on volume of cylinders. The student always is very enthusiastic about doing her math. She had no problems grasping the concepts, and was working ahead of me most of the time!

The student and I reviewed and as needed corrected his math homework, which dealt with adding and subtracting exponents. He still did not have a pencil, and I again stressed the need to have one for math. After that he asked me about "The King's Speech," and I checked him out a copy. I asked him what he knew about the modern monarchy, and then gave a brief history lesson on the British monarchs from Victoria to Elizabeth II, providing hopefully interesting details (e.g., how both George V and George VI were essentially "understudies," because their brothers did not ascend to the throne -- and provided the reason for each).

Today we covered a homework assignment focused on iterated double integrals over a specified region and swapping the bounds of the integral in order to solve. The student had a good understanding of the material. He only required some brief review of some of the methods for integration.

Tutoring review by Eduard in Mount Kisco, NY
The student had a test on Tuesday and we met the night before to help her prepare for it. The test covered 5 different sections from a chapter and we worked through each one. I answered questions she had about the sections she had already studied and we did several examples that clarified the content. We then reviewed the sections that she hadn't covered much and I explained to her what she needed to know. We covered polynomials, finding their roots, factoring, graphing rational functions, etc. She understands the concepts and she is ready for the test. I told her for her own reassurance that she can work on more practice problems, but overall, she is ready for the test. She was engaged and receptive to learning during the session.
