Tutoring review by Megan in Mill Valley, CA
Yesterday, the student and I went over her final review packet in preparation for her final next Tuesday. She worked through the entire packet during our session, and knew how to solve most of the problems. Area and surface area problems were the only ones that tripped her up, but she simply needs to memorize the formulas in order to be able to solve them on the final. She knew there was a formula to use and knew how to use the formula once she looked it up. By the end of our session, she had most of them committed to memory. She felt confident for her final on Tuesday and I have no doubt she will do well!

I mainly focused on helping the student with his math on Thursday. He was asked to work on coming up with the missing part of equivalent fractions. He has a solid grasp on multiplication which really helped him focus on learning the techniques. Because fractions can be tricky we worked on two different ways that you can find equivalent fractions and I hope that he is asked to do more fractions next week for more practice. If not then after his math homework I think giving him a couple equivalent fractions questions will be helpful.

The student and I worked on solving for taxes for individuals in different tax brackets. I noticed he made a couple of calculator errors by inputting the wrong numbers or from misreading from his own notes. I advised him to rework the problems from the homework we worked together for further practice.

Tutoring review by Isabelle in Mill Valley, CA
As per usual, we reviewed the previous night's' homework as well as old tests. We worked on area, perimeter, and volume as well as how to find averages. Some of the problems were multistep and caused the student a bit of confusion until I showed her how to break the problem into steps. On the tests that we went over, most mistakes were calculation errors; a few were issues with rounding to a particular place value. I showed her how to very easily check her answers to see if they made sense. Going forward, I asked that she have a sheet of scratch paper to show me for every homework assignment and that she show the "reasonableness" test for each problem. I gave her extra practice on times tables to complete this weekend.

The student and I returned to the concept of discount and sale price. We were talking about Thanksgiving so I decided to have us "visit" the supermarket for some post-holiday sales on pecan pie, turkey, etc. This time he got the concept of finding the discount, then subtracting it from the original price, which he was having a hard time understanding last session. He needed help with which way to put values into the calculator, and I explained that if you are removing part of a price, you are subtracting that from the original price and not the other way around. I'm also trying to get him to make sense out of his answers. For example, a money answer of 1.5 doesn't make sense to our eyes and needs to be written as $1.50.
