Tutoring review by Andrew in Marcellus, NY
During this session we reviewed the student's first exam of the semester that covered linear inequalities and linear equations. She was handed back her test to review all of the problems that she answered incorrectly, re-do correctly them using a different method and then list why and how she answered the question incorrectly the first time. She performed extremely well on the problems given in numerical format, missing only .5 points on a single problem due to an incorrectly facing inequality sign (although she correctly graphed it on the number line-- it was simply transcription error). She encountered slightly more trouble in the problem solving section of her test but she always approached the problems in the correct fashion: first assigning a variable and then progressing piece-wise through the problem before designing a final equation/inequality. Her approach proved successful for the most part but she did make some mistakes on the more difficult problems. We worked through each mistake slowly and carefully and she felt confident about all of the concepts tested on this exam by the end of our session. She scored 91%, an A-, and was able to do so using a standardized method of approach for all of the word problems; she is making great progress so far!

Tutoring review by Mary in Marcellus, NY
We reviewed for the student's upcoming quiz on quadratics. I discussed different approaches when taking tests that consist of word problems. I highlighted the importance of reading the question carefully and the importance of doing the check. After finding an answer, refer back to question to see if there was a specific form the teacher wanted the answer in. If you get stuck on a word problem, continue with the test and come back to the question after.

Tutoring review by Scott in Marcellus, NY
We covered the student's math studies first. I decided to go into graphing, and presented some more advanced equations for him to figure out. We graphed them, and I showed some materials that approached the ideas of calculus. He showed a great interest in math theory, so we spent some time talking about real numbers, irrational numbers, and what makes a line a line. I tried to discuss his reading assignment. I asked him to get through at least 10 pages of Animal Farm and answer my written questions before our meeting. We ended with him showing me his online homework assignment, and we did some math problems as I taught him how to determine a line's slope from a graph (rise/run).

Tutoring review by Walter in Marcellus, NY
This was our first session of the school year. The student is very motivated and pleased with his new teachers (10th grade), especially his history teacher. Among his many goals, which includes at least a B average, he wants to work on his writing. I had him write a short essay on his goals for the year. I also had him read a short story by Sartre since he will be dealing with existentialism this year. He was ready, willing, and able.
