Tutoring review by Matthew in Mahtomedi, MN
The student's entire class has a retake of their previous test coming up. We worked on reviewing for that test based on a review sheet given by her teacher. We continued our coverage of factoring from our last session, including difference of squares and reverse FOIL, as well as a few examples of finding slopes and other applications of solving algebraic equations. Though she feels somewhat more comfortable with this material than some previous areas, she still needed assistance with some of the extensions and "tricky" problems that had been added.

Tutoring review by Carin in Mahtomedi, MN
The student has a quiz coming up, so we went over the topics covered by the quiz. They involved quadratic equations and functions, finding vertices and axes of symmetry, finding x-intercepts, and graphing. He had few errors, and those he did make were simple addition/multiplication mistakes. We discussed how to reduce these types of errors, and he agreed to try putting more steps down on paper (instead of doing so much in his head), and we will go over his answers again if he finishes the quiz on time. I have confidence that he will do well on this quiz.

The student and I worked on logarithmic and exponential functions today, reviewing how to convert from one to the other, what their graphs look like, how to transform the graphs, and then she worked on practice problems from her homework. She and I will continue to work on her algebra skills as we run into issues, and if I note anything that seems to give her a lot of struggles, I'll create some practice problems for her to work on the next week. She needed help with logarithms today during our session. By the end of the session, she was doing much better with logarithmic and exponential functions in general.
