Tutoring review by Amira in Ladue, MO
Today, I split the session between Students A and B. First, Student A and I went over a double passage that he had done before our sessions started. I gave him some "double passage-specific" strategies, and then we went through paragraph by paragraph and applied them. He then answered the questions anew and got them all correct. After that, I gave him a new critical reading session to try, and we discussed the questions he missed afterwards. With Student B, I used some geometry practice worksheets to familiarize her with some geometry strategies. When she was finished, we discussed the sentence completions and short passages from one of the sections she had done previously. I made sure they had copies of the practice exams for math and writing, and I gave Student B some last-minute tips on vocabulary building before I left.

Tutoring review by Khrishen in Ladue, MO
The student wanted to go over a practice test that had been given to him ahead of time to prepare for his exam in the afternoon. He specifically wanted to cover concepts that seemed unclear to him on the test. Accordingly, we went over determining the geometry of compounds, the hybridization state of different compounds, determining the molecular formula of compounds based on their valence electron availability and calculating the empirical formula of organic compounds. I was able to help him with the questions he had problems with on the test, but he will need to go back over the underlying concepts in the periodic table.

Tutoring review by Garrett in Ladue, MO
Today we did a bunch of practice problems in preparation for the student's math test tomorrow. Her performance on the test will determine whether or not she gets moved up to the accelerated math class, so obviously the test is quite important.  We worked through many different types of practice problems, including multiplying and dividing fractions, multiplying and dividing algebraic expressions, and simplifying algebraic expressions. The student did quite well with binomial factoring and simplifying factors numerically, but she needed reminding that when you have sums or differences in the numerator and denominator, you cannot divide through by a common factor- you can only do this when you have products. This was the overarching rule that she needed to have reinforced, as it was the reason for some of her recent missteps in math questions. Over the course of the session this rule seemed to sink in, and I think she is well-situated to do well on her test tomorrow.

Tutoring review by Heather in Ladue, MO
Tonight, the student and I worked on finishing his review over one of the chapters of the book his class is working on 'Lord of the Flies'.  Student finished his assignment and was able to email to his teacher. After he was finished with his assignment over the 'Lord of the Flies', he began his work over his other reading assignment, 'The Grapes of Wrath'. His class had read the first chapter, in class, and he just needed to write a small paragraph over the plot line, characters and settings in this first chapter. He was also able to complete this assignment.
