Recent Kelso Tutoring Session Notes

Tutoring review by Tessa in Kelso, WA
Today the student needed help mostly with math, because they watched The Outsiders today in English, to coincide with the novel. Although He said that he didn't really hear the teacher, after discussing two practice problems in-depth, he was solving the equations quickly and accurately. After studying language arts the rest of the session, we went back to review the math work, and he was amazingly quick to solve review work. We also covered ways to check answers on linear equations by "plugging-in numbers." We covered reading comprehension, followed by sentence structure. Identifying the different parts of the sentence (verb, subject, object, etc.) will need more work. Vocabulary words come easily, and he is able to use context fairly well to discern meanings of previously unseen words. I recommend on days we don't meet, to read 15-20 min a day from either class work, or self-selected works.

Tutoring review by Jaki in Kelso, WA
Today we began by reviewing the student's grades thus far. His final first quarter marks have not come out yet, but the last updated grades look very good. We then went through the work that he planned out over the week, and what he was able to get done. We spent most of the time working on the English packets he has due on Monday. We planned what times would work best for next week and what work he would get done on what days over the weekend.

Tutoring review by Michael in Kelso, WA
Very good final session with the student! I believe she will score very high on the test. We were able to spend some time on each of the 4 sections. On Math, I mostly encouraged the use of diagrams, tables, charts, and calculators -- the use of all tools at one's disposal in order to make the experience the easiest it can be. English and Reading didn't require much work, as she scored perfectly on each of the passages that we did during the session. We practiced some Science, during which I strongly encouraged the "hands on" approach, where the left hand is used to mark one's place on the passage, and the right hand is used to mark one's place on the question. We ended in a good place. Best of luck!

Tutoring review by Mark in Kelso, WA
The student began the session with questions about nonlinear regression and corrections that can be made for confounds of regression analysis such as quadratic trends, heteroscedasticity, and collinearity. We reviewed what each of these terms meant, how to transform the data to fit a linear model, how to model the equation so it fits a nonlinear model, and how to detect and correct for collinearity.
