In this session, the student and I covered math and reading, approximately 1 hour each. For math, we continued practicing the concepts that we have been studying, focusing on applying them to the SAT questions. For reading, we focused on "active reading" and anticipating the questions that will be asked. This type of reading is much more effective because it enables the test taker to answer the questions without having to re-read the passage several times. Overall, we're continuing to make progress, but we're still covering the fundamentals. He has to make progress there before he will be able to significantly improve his score.

The student and I reviewed a Math worksheet on decimals. He was successfully able to identify decimals and graph the decimals on a number line. We also co-read a story, "On the Banks of Plum Creek" in his reading book. He then answered a few comprehension and discussion questions about the story. In addition, we worked on summarizing several passages on an electronic learning game.

We have covered the unit circle and graphing trig functions. The student didn't understand the unit circle initially. I was able to get him interested by connecting with him using video games. I thought him how to build the unit circle from scratch. I left him to practice making the unit circle. I believe he understood it by the end of the session.

Tutoring review by Michael in Kaysville, UT
I had a very good session today with the student. We went over the basics of a number of concepts in trigonometry. First, we looked at the graphs of sines and cosines. Using the form of d + a sin (bx - c), we identified the ways the graph can shift and change depending on the coefficients of the equation. After this, we reviewed the trig identities, practiced verifying them, and reviewed the unit circle in connection to evaluating trig equations -- finding an angle, given its sine and cosine.

Tutoring review by John in Kaysville, UT
We went over some review problems that the student's teacher gave to the class. The main concept was how to use the fundamental theorem of calculus. The first section could be done without a calculator, and a calculator was needed for the second part. He is very good with the calculator but needed some work in knowing exactly when and how to use it. He was getting the hang of it by the end.
