Recent Herriman Tutoring Session Notes

Tutoring review by Derryen in Herriman, UT
During our session we covered how to graph inequalities. The student has a good grasp on how to solve and graph the inequalities themselves, but struggles when the information is contained in a word problem. I suggested that the student should try and underline the important parts of the word problem (specific numbers, variables, etc.) and circle what the problem is asking for. Word problems can be tricky when then contain a lot of information, so if the student is able to dissect each sentence individually and organize the data it contains, it will be easier for him to solve the problems. His attitude was on the positive side during the session, although I could tell that math definitely wasn't his favorite subject. Despite that, he has a very good understanding of the material so far, might just need a little more practice. I will be emailing his mother 2-3 inequality word problems for the student to practice before his test on Wednesday. I hope a good grade on the test will increase his enthusiasm for math and will help these concepts stick even quicker!

Tutoring review by Carolyn in Herriman, UT
Fluency, vocabulary and comprehension were covered using student materials. The student speeds through the reading by disregarding punctuation. We reviewed short paragraphs from school as well as his vocabulary lesson. He was encouraged to slow down the reading, even to the point of stopping after each sentence. He was encouraged to continue that process.

Tutoring review by Sara in Herriman, UT
The student had a good session today. We finished reviewing all of her assignments. We started with her theme worksheet for English. She did very well with that, and easily recognized the theme for each reading. We then reviewed math. She had to draw a number line and write an equation for each word problem. She did well with this, and typically knew the right answer before even working the problem. She is very good at math! She has very good intuition. She finished the math and then worked on social studies. She read the passages and answered the questions without any trouble. We finished up by reviewing the eight parts of speech for English class. She knew all of them without me telling her, so she should have no problem on the upcoming quiz! She is doing very well this year.

The student and I went through her two common application drafts as well as her supplement to check for major structure edits as well as basic grammar changes. She is a very strong writer but no matter who you are it is hard to write a Why This College essay with such a small word count! We went through three drafts of most of her essays and I believe we walked away from the session with some amazing pieces of writing. If she has any further questions she is more than welcome to reach out this evening -- I will have my phone on me all night!

Tutoring review by Daniel in Herriman, UT
We covered things the student missed on his quiz about infinite series. He had some issues identifying which test would best show that it is convergent or divergent. His attitude was fine. I just showed him which tests are useful for different types of problems and showed him how to solve some of the tricky ones. He understood his mistakes and understood the approach I showed him.
