Tutoring review by Jennifer in Hercules, CA
I had reviewed the student's quiz. I saw that she had initially struggled with writing two-step equations from word problems, so I had planned on reviewing that. However, she had mastered the skill and was able to find the variable, constant, coefficient, and total in any given problem. We discussed how some equations could be written multiple ways (for example, problems involving subtraction from an initial quantity could also be written as the sum of the constant and the coefficient) as well as how to deal with consecutive numbers. She completed an extended response to use consecutive numbers in an advanced setting. We used the strategy of solving a similar, simpler problem to gain understanding of the underlying structure. This enabled her to tackle the final problem that could not have been solved easily by drawing a picture. She has been assigned the chapter test as homework. For science, we worked on understanding different types of plate boundaries. We used a model of graham crackers and pudding to model the lithosphere and asthenosphere, and then analyzed the model for its strengths and weaknesses. The student will watch a video and take notes by Friday to gain additional understanding.

We used an Algebra workbook to cover basic topics such as Algebra vocabulary, properties, expressions, equations (one variable), and inequalities. The student was excited to learn because she wants to enter an Algebra class. She is a fast learner and just needs to build her confidence and think through each problem before answering to do very well in Algebra. For practice, she will be continuing with her workbook. She is a great student, and I am happy to work with her.

Tutoring review by Leslie in Hercules, CA
Today, we went over the student's packet on slope and graphing linear functions, as well as rearranging linear equations into slope-intercept form (y=mx+b). She said that the topics she was most confused on from the previous time was determining, from a table or list of ordered pairs, if a relation is a function. I told her about the "vending machine" metaphor for making sure that each input has only one output, so that you always know what output to expect.

Tutoring review by Jon in Hercules, CA
We worked on a practice assessment exam, verbal and quantitative sections, going over each question and discussing problem-solving and test-taking/time management strategies. The student's vocabulary is grade-appropriate, and his math skills are sound. For our next session, he can continue working on the practice test we used during this session.
