Tutoring review by Joseph in Enumclaw, WA
The student has a test next week, and today we reviewed for it, practicing several techniques pertaining to rational functions, exponential functions, logarithmic functions, and inequalities. She had forgotten many of the concepts that we had reviewed in prior weeks, but she said they seemed familiar again when I re-explained them. I have urged her to go back over her notes and past work to help remember things before the test.

Tutoring review by Gabriel in Enumclaw, WA
The student seemed to struggle most with getting back into the swing of things mathematics wise. He missed the first few days of the year and seemed a bit rusty from the summer. As the session progressed, the topics clicked easier for him. Whenever I went back to a previous topic, he seemed sure of the answer. One main strategy I left him when test taking or answering questions, is that most questions have two parts, what is being asked and the given information. Focus in on what is being asked in the question, and use what you are given to solve it. There were a few questions from his beginning of the year evaluation which he got wrong, only because he gave the answer in either the wrong form or did not give what the question in particular asked for, even if he solved that part in some portion of the response. I told him to take note of any topics that give him difficulty, so that we can go over next time we meet.

The student didn't have too many questions this session. We covered all of the problems that he wasn't sure about from the last two homework assignments. We spent the most time going over how to 'complete the square,' which is a technique that was just covered in his class this week. We did a couple of 'complete the square' problems, and then we worked through how to derive the quadratic equations using that method. We also worked through part of the practice test for Algebra II. He was pretty much able to solve all of the questions about material that he had covered last year and this year so far.

I helped the student with writing a Valentine's Day messages for his classmates. I checked off each one he completed on the list of names. The focus of the lesson was penmanship and spelling. He read aloud through a portion of his assigned reading for lit club and highlighted any unfamiliar words. I asked him reading comprehension questions as we went through the story, and helped him to divide long words into syllables to sound out individually.

Tutoring review by Yukica in Enumclaw, WA
We completed our last test prep session just before the SSAT date. The session was a review of all we have learned up until this point. It is impossible to cover everything in such a limited amount of time but the goal was to strengthen her strengths, assist in areas revealed through the diagnostic test, easy areas to remedy, and make gains through exposure to new concepts. Our review consisted of recent skills learned, mainly in geometry, and flashcards in verbal, reading, and math areas. We spent quite a bit of time discussing test taking strategies specific to the SSAT. I wish her the best! She is a bright and hardworking student with awesome potential! She is great with problem solving in math, but I encourage her to continue to explore words and build vocabulary with verbal practice.

We went over the student's exam problem by problem. He did not originally recall his rules when working with exponents, but later understood them when we reviewed them. He solved every problem on the exam, and he is going to check to make sure he got the right answers.
