Tutoring review by James in Efland, NC
Tuesday, was the student's 2nd Algebra tutoring session. It was very successful! The student and I have outstanding communication. We are able to move very quickly through topics and he is able to demonstrate his proficiency by writing and explaining solutions to me. He is comfortable asking questions and is always up for the challenge of solving difficult problems. He seems to enjoy math. Specifically, we focused on writing, solving, and graphing one-variable and two-variable inequalities, including compound inequalities. We focused a good amount of time on reviewing writing inequalities from word problems by translating phrases such as "no more than" and "at least" into correct mathematical inequalities. The solutions to these word problems were discussed so that he could accurately interpret what the graphed shaded regions represented. We were able to advance him four sections ahead of his current class. He feels very confident in his ability to write, solve, and graph inequalities, as well as interpret his solutions. The last half hour was spent on reviewing past topics, including factoring trinomials, solving for x-intercepts and the y-intercept, finding the vertex of a quadratic function, and graphing parabolas. The student discovered that it's possible for a parabola to cross the x-axis twice, once, or not at all. We related this concept to the discriminant and even introduced imaginary numbers. Additionally, I showed him a clear algorithm for factoring trinomials in the form of ax^2 + bx + c, where "a" is not equal to 1. He appreciated learning this method because it removes all the guesswork when trying to factor challenging trinomials. Excellent work! I gave him additional Algebra packets summing up some big ideas. I am confident he will do awesome on his quiz in a week. We will have one more tutoring session prior to this assessment.

Tutoring review by Liban in Efland, NC
We focused on word problems and how to approach them. I offered the student a system of answering them which included identifying the key objective, important information, and the unknown factor. I showed her several examples and worked through the system of approach with her. When she felt ready, I had her try some previous corrections that incorporated the system. She felt comfortable with the questions by the end of the session. I assigned her some practice problems to help her sharpen skills learned.

Tutoring review by Ramon in Efland, NC
The student and I covered quadratic equations and similar problems for his test. We went through many problems involving imaginary numbers, quadratic equations, and complex conjugation. He understands the material, but it isn't immediately obvious to him when his answer is completely simplified. Knowing that comes from practice.
