The student and I began our comprehensive review a week before his math final exam. His teacher provided a review packet so we just jumped right in. I made notes on his progress and the subjects he feels comfortable with. At the end of our review, I will make him a study guide with short quick notes to remind him of tricks and concepts with the subjects.

Tutoring review by Armon in Edgewood, WA
Today, we reviewed for the student's second exam, covering late chapter 7 and 11 sections, and the first sections of chapter 8. We spent the first 2.5 hours doing review problems provided by his instructor. We covered questions from all sections of chapters 7 and 11, giving a comprehensive review over the current material. We gave focus early on to the concepts of error estimation using the midpoint, trapezoid, and Simpson's Rule. The last 1.75 hrs. were spend doing problems from chapter 8. This chapter introduced arc length, and using his knowledge of integrals and series, we tackled about 12 of the ones provided. He seemed to have slight nerves initially, but after I fielded and explained questions that he had about this content for this exam, he seemed to relax a bit and we did very well on the first sets of problems. For these types of problems, there are not hard and fast rules that give a certain solution route. This is because of the staggering number of different functions that define series and sequences. I encouraged the student not to allow the more difficult functions to diminish his confidence in his calculus skills. We solved a large number of the review problems correctly. For all of the problems that we performed incorrectly, we were able to look back and identify our missteps. As I explained rationales for solution routes, he seemed to have an easy time recalling concepts, which gave him a greater understanding of the current entire picture of calculus 2. I will conclude by saying that the student seemed to have a better grasp of this material, when compared to his preparation for Exam 1. This is a great improvement when considering the fact that the material has more than doubled in quantity. His effort has been outstanding this semester, and I feel confident that he can look forward to an improvement from his previous exam score.

Tutoring review by Mayha in Edgewood, WA
This week we covered factoring polynomials with different coefficients on the a term. We did so by factoring and grouping methods. The student had a test the next Thursday and we were able to go over the questions that he struggled with over the week. He does well when we practice a lot, rather than do a lesson. This is because he understands the concepts but has more difficulty executing them when they go beyond the basics. It's not a problem at all because it is possible to fix. We went over a wide range of problems using his textbook, worksheets and notes from class. We stayed mostly with the textbook because I have an answer key for it.

I started this session with a small "quiz" on integration by parts to make sure the student was still up to speed with those techniques. Then we did integration with cot and csc functions.
