Recent Deer Park Tutoring Session Notes

Tutoring review by Jennifer in Deer Park, WA
We spent the first 20 minutes of our session discussing her progression through this semester; what topics she understood, where and when she started to struggle, how many quizzes and tests remain, her opinion about the textbook, and preferred learning style. Her results from the learning style assessment showed her to be very neutral, with very slight preferences toward visual versus verbal explanation and sensing (fact based learning) rather than intuitive (discovering relationships) learning. Based on the topics discussed, it looks like this semester is devoted to Chapters 2 - 4 in her text: Ratios, Polynomials, Factoring, Quadratics, Complex Numbers, Functions (current topic), Graphing (current topic), and potentially sequences, series, and conic sections. Part 1 of functions is where her challenges began and since the subsequent lessons have built upon this foundation she hasn't been able to catch up just yet. While her most recent lesson was on exponential functions and graphing them, we took a step back to graphing linear functions and solving for their inverses first. I wanted to see her basic understanding of what a function is and how it can be manipulated. We then reviewed function compositions and subsequently moved onto exponential functions. We only had time to discuss their basic shape, and we walked through 4 major rules for how the value of an exponential functions' base or its exponent dictates its direction of flow. I gave her 3 practice problems from her textbook to complete before our next session on solving for an exponential function equation, finding a composition, and graphing two exponential functions.

Tutoring review by John in Deer Park, WA
Worked with the student on pre-calculus and physics. In physics, worked on two-equation acceleration and velocity problems. Just needed to understand that not all problems can be done in one equation or step. Worked with trigonometry word problems in pre-calculus. Has a good understanding of the material.

We went over various topics that were included on a review for his exam. These topics include the fundamental theorem of calculus, linear approximation, maximizing and minimizing functions and finding the average value of a function. The student is making steady progress in his understanding of the subject areas as well as his ability to apply certain concepts.

Tutoring review by Shivalika S. in Deer Park, WA
I started Monday's lesson for the student by going over probability and different kinds of probabilities there are. I gave him an overview of simple probability, compound probability, and independent and dependent probabilities. After reviewing the terms and their definitions, I showed him examples of each. To test his grasp of probabilities, I allowed him to work plenty of problems under each concept and he was able to get all of them correct on his own indicating a proficient understanding of the concepts I taught him. He should be well ahead of his class. We will start our next session by reviewing over his packet for the exam and if we have any leftover time he can work on a test I will bring for him on circles, parallelograms, and probability.

Tutoring review by Jaxon in Deer Park, WA
The student and I covered a number of topics today. We work on applications of the chain rule, integration by parts, optimization, and related rates. She has a really good grasp on the geometries in related rates, something which I've seen a lot of students struggle with. She still seems to struggle with, though, the relationships between position, velocity, and acceleration, and has trouble remembering when to differentiate and when to integrate. We worked a number of problems that she has been stuck on from her online course.

This session we discussed specific uses for Latin cases, focusing on the ablative, dative, and accusative. The student seemed to be struggling to synthesize the multiple sources of information she has access to through her class modules, so I sent her an overview of case usage from the Latin Library. This session we also discussed strategies to manage classroom dialogue and potential confrontation. She recently got a 92 on her pronunciation assignment.
