The student and I worked on exponential functions since he did not have any questions regarding his mock algebra exam that was completed at school. We reviewed how to write exponential functions in standard format by calculating the "a" and "b" coefficients using table values for x and y. We also reviewed the differences between exponential and linear functions, direct and inverse variation, independent and dependent variables, and exponential growth and decay. The student did great!

Tutoring review by Winnie in Dayton, MN
Today we focused on various review subjects including, mean, median and mode; surface area, proportions, area, and basic fractions and squares. In addition to review I taught him how to find slope of two points. He was somewhat mixed up between the x and y axis of a point when finding the slope, however after making his flashcards I think he has a better understanding. We will continue to cover this topic until he fully understands it.

Tutoring review by Lindsey in Dayton, MN
Today we worked on pattern tasks. I want to build the student's ability to recognize and generalize patterns so that algebra makes more sense when he gets there. He struggles with generalizing and thinking outside of the box or differently than he's been shown. He kept going back to strategies that the teacher had done specifically instead of trying to look at things from a wider variety of perspectives. This is something that will come with more time and more experience. I left the student with some tables/ patterns to complete for homework. Next time we meet, we will use those tables to start the conversation on algebra and linear functions.

The student and I covered more details about limits in order to prepare for her quiz. I also helped her out on some questions she had about her chemistry homework and it seems like she's doing very well and has a good understanding about what she's been learning so far.
