We covered function notation, graphing functions, and transformations. The student had slight difficulty with understanding a few concepts related to solving the problems, including identifying inputs and outputs, multiplying polynomials, and simplifying. She was able to quickly understand what I taught her, and she seemed confident in her ability to solve the problems after she understood the concepts better. I also helped her with breaking complex problems into smaller parts so that she could solve them in steps. After I helped her realize what she could do better, she fixed her mistakes and solved the problems correctly. At the end, she said that the session was very helpful and that she felt more confident about the material and the upcoming exam.

The student and I went over graphing sinusoidal curves. We practiced graphing and finding key points for the parent graphs of sine and cosine; we then did graphs and details for sine and cosine graphs with changes to amplitude, frequency, phase shifts, and vertical shifts. We practiced finding a period given B, or finding B given the period of a graph. We practiced creating an equation from a graph and graphing the function giving the equation. She is so smart! She gets concepts very quickly, makes few mistakes, and is a creative problem solver.

Tutoring review by Andy in Colonial Heights, VA
The student continues to improve, but he also forgets rules that we went over. For example, we have covered the rules for punctuation that separates independent clauses. On practice tests where I have recently refreshed his memory on this rule, he doesn't make mistakes. However, if I haven't reviewed this concept for more than 2 weeks, he forgets to apply this rule to questions that ask about separating two independent clauses. Knowing this, we are going to do a thorough review the week of the test.

We reviewed the poem Paul Revere's Ride and discussed the differences between the story and the poem. Then, we reviewed each of the 7 units on the grammar exam. The student has a good handle of the grammar and should do very well on the exam!
