The student completed her reading homework on "Bud, Not Buddy" by writing down 2 of her new rules and what she thought they meant/why she had them. We worked from her 7th grade geometry book on volumes and how to find the hypotenuse of a triangle. We also worked on Order of Operations and how they play out in the Distributive Property, etc. We ended the session by reading aloud from one of her books to work on an upcoming writing assignment.

The student and I started by looking at some details about Egypt and filling in potential main idea sentences for them in a graphic organizer. After that, we did some reading about a rapper who wrote a book to teach kids that bullying doesn't pay. He did a nice job using text features and other strategies, like note-taking, to maintain his comprehension. He then used his notes to identify the three most important details of the article and its main idea.

Tutoring review by Kendra in Clifton Heights, PA
During today's final session, the student and I reviewed the main strategies and key concepts in each of the SAT test subjects. We began by briefly covering the material in the writing section, starting with the essay. I gave him general advice on how to approach the essay portion, such as the importance of brainstorming and writing an outline before jumping into writing the body of the essay. We also discussed how using concrete, specific details engages the reader more than the use of abstract and general statements. We also looked at the three types of English multiple-choice question, along with examples and practice questions. He said he felt most confident about the English section, and he performed well on the practice questions. We then spent the remainder of the session reviewing important strategies for the math and reading subject areas as well as overall test-taking strategies, such as the importance of pacing, using process of elimination, and skipping hard questions to return to them later. He said he felt better prepared for the test due to our sessions, and his performance on the math and reading section especially showed a marked improvement.

Tutoring review by Anne in Clifton Heights, PA
The student got a 95% on his Module One test, which is excellent! He and I worked through two sections of his precalculus course today. In the first one, on polynomials of higher degree, we talked about the end behavior of polynomials, the binomial expansion using Pascal's triangle, the intermediate value theorem and how it can be used to prove the existence of zeroes of functions, and the extrema theorem. In the second unit on real zeroes of polynomials, we used both polynomial long division and synthetic division to explore different roots and zeros of higher degree polynomials. The student seemed to be absorbing the material well; he still has a good grounding in this from his advanced algebra II class, and I am glad he is remembering as much material from there as he is. He seemed a little more confident this evening, which was wonderful.
