The student and I planned for the future sessions and continued our algebra review. We went over questions from the math review, and we reviewed solving both linear and quadratic equations. She is catching onto factoring and the quadratic formula well. The student is showing fantastic improvement in her algebra skills. Tomorrow, we will meet and finish algebra and begin geometry.

We worked on calculating angles in triangles. She worked through 15 problems similar to her sample exam. We will review older material as well as how to structure answers to questions (let x statements, multiple variables/multiple equations etc.).

Tutoring review by Steve in Chestertown, MD
Today the student and I reviewed the material he needs to know for his test tomorrow. We were able to cover a broad range of materials, including implicit differentiation, the chain rule, the quotient rule, and finding normal and tangent lines. As long as he can think clearly through these problems, I think he has the potential to do well. I told them if he has any more questions as he is studying tonight that he should not hesitate to call me.

Tutoring review by Lyndsy in Chestertown, MD
The student worked on a chapter review for rate of change and linear functions. He can easily identify coordinates, and with a small reminder can find slope using (y1-y2)/(x1-x2). He has some challenges finding the y-intercept. He has improved in being able to identify which is the dependent and which is the independent variable in word problems or from a graph. He also completed a chapter summary from history about the 1920's. I taught him how to go back and reread info he has already read to find the answer. Per a request from the student's mother, he and I have started to practice pronunciations with multi-syllabic words. The middle syllable is the one he is challenged by the most.

Tutoring review by Junior in Chestertown, MD
Today, the student was starting new material on multiplication properties of exponents, including zero exponents, and negative exponents. The strategy was to model the rules with examples: (a^3*a^2)=a^5; (a^3)^4=a^12; (a*b^2)^3=a^3*b^6. Rule for zero exponent:n^0=1 unless n=0. (0^0 is undefined.) The rule with negative exponents was explained to him in terms of reciprocals of the base. Extra practice with simplifying exponential expressions and graphing exponential functions was provided.

Tutoring review by Audrey in Chestertown, MD
The student reviewed his multiplication facts and did a good job. We worked on a packet from his classroom teacher on measurement conversions. I attempted to show him how to set up a ratio for the conversion equivalences that he needed. It is a concept that will be reviewed. He completed the first problem set. I remarked that there was a section his parents needed to help him with at home, measuring the area of his house.
