Tutoring review by Chris in Anoka, MN
I had one more session with the student before his midterm. In this session, we reviewed the topics that were still giving him trouble. This was mostly a matter of Linear Differential Equations. We went through the process of the solution and derivation one more time before breaking it into a fairly digestible series of steps. He seemed a great deal more confident in solving that type of problem when we had finished. We also went back to touch upon line integrals and surface area of revolution. He mainly seemed to want a quick review on the formulas involved and to practice them once or twice. Overall, I think he's pretty well prepared for his mid-term and I'm curious to hear how well he does.

The student and I had a productive session on Thursday, continuing with sequences and starting series. As planned, we started by doing lots of practice problems to reinforce what we had covered on arithmetic, geometric, and recursive series, focusing mostly on the latter two. I gave her two much clearer formulas for arithmetic and geometric series than the ones we had used the day before. We talked about how each of these series is built: starting with the first term and either multiplying by or adding a common ratio or difference n-1 times, to get the nth term. We spent a few minutes talking about this significance of "n-1." We also got the chance to review a very important but subtle concept, which is the difference between "a-sub-n" and "n." "n" refers to the nth term, whereas a-sub-n refers to the actual value of the nth term. This distinction is particularly important when finding the rule or formula for a sequence. She did well with the geometric series but had an understandably harder time with recursive series. These do challenge your brain to sort of think in reverse, so it took a few practice problems for her to get the hang of it. I'd like to do a couple more of these to start Monday's session. We ended with an introduction to series, which are sums of sequences. Working with series requires an understanding of sigma notation, so we spent the last 15 or so minutes of the session reviewing how to write and interpret very simple, partial series with this notation. We'll pick up with this on Monday and spend that session, and probably Wednesday's as well, moving forward with series and partial series/sums.

I helped the student work through problems on his worksheet covering unit 8 on arithmetic and geometric sequences. After going through the worksheet, I also had the student do practice geometric sequence problems from questions I pulled from the internet for extra practice. Similar to the last tutoring sessions, I asked the student to walk me through the problem he had just solved and explain to me how to solve it to make sure he fully understood how to work out the problem.

We looked at questions based on thermal physics - how much affects the expanding and contracting of materials such as steel bridges and containers. The other subject under discussion this week was fluid dynamics, and we looked at some questions based on air flow involving Bernoulli's equation.

Tonight we reviewed slopes and slope intercept form. We went over the student's homework problems that involved finding slope when given two points. We also talked about the differences in slope when it comes to a horizontal line and a vertical line. We practiced graphing what the linear lines looked like (negative slope lines vs positive slope lines) and also reviewed how to put equations into y=mx+b form. He knew what he was doing on the problems and we will be meeting again at the beginning of next week. He told me that he received an 85% on his test from Tuesday and he was very happy with that score since it was an improvement from previous tests! He said that he attempted the word problems on the test and felt more confident than he did prior to our tutoring session. I am very proud of him and I know with his hard work and determination, he will be able to keep improving his score!

We went over her huge packet. Primarily we covered fractions and fundamental geometry. Her packet covered a variety of topics. The student's main weakness is now geometry and interpreting graphs. Overall, we made a lot of progress. After the session, she took notes to take home and I am giving her practice on websites I used myself to practice.
