The student and I reviewed for an upcoming test regarding trig functions and angular velocity. We began by reviewing questions on angular and linear speed. We practiced converting between the different ways of expressing angular and linear speed. She and I then focused on compound angular/linear speed problems such as ones involving bicycle gears. We finished the review by completing problems involving real-world situations. We solved for both distances and angles/bearings using trig functions and parallel line properties.

The student did well tonight! We reviewed his homework for tomorrow and did some homework corrections. He's improved so much on his work when it comes to working through the problems patiently, as well as making fewer mistakes. His work has become so much neater also, which is great! His final is coming up next week, so at the next session, we'll be completing the review/study guide and preparing for it! I'm excited to see how he does on his final and see his final grade. He's worked hard, and I know he can finish strong!

Tutoring review by Lihui in Tarpon Springs, FL
We studied minimization of distance between one mobile point on a curve and another fixed point off the curve. The Lagrange multiplier method was used. We examined the reason why when minimization is achieved, the line connecting the two points is perpendicular to the curve. This is because, as the Lagrange multiplier method shows, at that point the gradient of the function that defines the curve is parallel to the line connecting two points. We also briefly went through the concept that differential is just the linear part of delta, so that f(a)+df(a)=f(a)+f'(a)dx is just the linear approximation of f at the point a.
