Tutoring review by Jeffrey in Point Pleasant, NJ
We discussed properties of exponents. This was an issue the student had on one of her first quizzes right before starting together so we worked through each property slowly to make sure she understood how to simplify equations. After solidifying her understanding of exponents we continued on to roots of expressions and their similarities and differences to exponents. She progressively improved in problem-solving but had some issues with dividing fractions; she forgot to multiply the reciprocal and instead multiplied by the fraction on several occasions. For both exponents and roots, I explained how to use arrows to keep track of distribution of exponents/ roots. I also showed how to factor numbers under root symbols that can use the root and be taken out in order to simplify roots. I saw great improvement throughout the session, and even more so since our first encounter where she had the most trouble with exponents. I advised that she review the examples in book to solidify understanding of properties of both exponents and root functions.

We worked on area, perimeter, and volume because the students have an upcoming test. I taught them how to find area using the formula rather than counting the cubes. They did well on all the practice problems.

Tutoring review by Steven in Point Pleasant, NJ
Most of the session we covered the formal definition of derivative, and we approximated the slope of the tangent line by calculating the slope of the secant line. The student has a solid grasp with the content but at times had a hard time with the length of the calculation required to find the instantaneous slope of the tangent line. She felt more comfortable with the idea of the instantaneous rate of change at the end of the session. The student had notes and was working on homework problems when we met.
