Tutoring review by Catherine in New Port Richey, FL
The student did state testing all of last week and then had a placement test today, so she had no new material to cover or homework to work on, so we did an extra worksheet that her teacher had given her. The worksheet covered some problems with percentages, surface area and volume with unknown sides, counting integers, finding a number given some facts about it, and identifying number patterns.

Today we went over one of the practice exams. We focused mostly on picking the best approach to solving each math problem. We worked primarily on the quantitative comparison problems, and practiced when to try plugging in the answer. We also went over a little geometry and basic statistics. After teaching the student how to look for patterns in the problems, she was able to solve many problems within a few seconds. She is going to take another practice exam on the website, and then we will meet again to determine what we should focus our remaining sessions on.

The student showed me all his graded assignments from the week. His lowest grades were in vocabulary and spelling assignments. I'll help him review these for upcoming assignments. He then read his religion reading as well as his reading on the Mexican-American War. I then tested him on the material. I first focused on vocabulary words, dates, and then deeper comprehension. I asked him to define words like citizen, dispute, and treaty. I asked him who the president was during the war (James K Polk), and he knew the war started in 1846. He should know what was acquired, the price, and the territorial boundary changes. He has a quiz on Monday on circuits. I think he'll do well.

Today, we focused on triangle inequalities - how to find the range of the third side length of a triangle given the two other side lengths. The student is doing well in this unit. She has to take care of making sure her inequalities face the right direction and also be careful of minor algebra mistakes.

The student did very well at basic algebraic tasks like manipulating equations and plotting lines. However, his conceptual understanding of exponents was a bit shaky, likely explaining his difficulty with exponential functions. We will continue to review these functions on Wednesday.

Tutoring review by Martina-Alexandra in New Port Richey, FL
The student finished reading A Tale of Two Cities! We commenced this session with a few pages of mind builders to warm up and then dove into 15, 16, and the review in root words. We are now more than halfway through root words 2 and she is looking forward to starting book 2. She is getting better and better at identifying words she has never heard before based on their suffixes and prefixes, and her sentences are always a joy to read. I had her do grammar pages for homework.
