Tutoring review by Lyndsy in Mounds View, MN
The student has an English paper due tomorrow. He pulled up the requirements, guidelines, and examples that his teacher gave him. Then, I read the analysis as written. With my guidance and the teacher's requirements, he rewrote the introduction and reworded his thesis regarding Mary Shelly's Frankenstein and main character Victor. Next, he incorporated and explained quotes directly from the novel. The objective of the paper is to support, prove, and analyze Shelly's use of imagery throughout the novel. Lastly, he reworked the conclusion to include the teacher's requirements. He did grow excited when some of the metaphorical references finally made sense to him.

Tutoring review by John in Mounds View, MN
We began to review for his final that would take place on Friday. We began by discussing the laws of cosine and sine and their application when solving triangles. We learned the criteria used to determine which law should be applied. We focused on the six ambiguous cases that could arise when given two sides and a non included angle. We considered cases where a triangle would not be possible with the given information. Next, we reviewed conversions between rectangular and polar coordinates and equations. We derived the four identities used in these cases by considering the Pythagorean theorem and trigonometry. We also reviewed three types of polar equations and the methods used to graph them. Lastly, we discussed complex numbers and their graphical representations. We saw that complex numbers could also be represented in two forms. We learned to convert between the rectangular and trigonometric forms of complex numbers. We practiced addition and multiplication of complex numbers on both forms. There is a lot more to review, but he seemed very comfortable with the topics we covered during this session.

Tutoring review by Emily in Mounds View, MN
We covered calculating the area for composite figures, a spiral review, and looked over the student's test review. The spiral review packet has gotten so much easier for her and she does it almost completely independent of me. Composite area also went well once she remembered all of the formulas for area. She still tends to mix up perimeter/area and radius/diameter when she is moving too quickly though a problem or trying to do too much in her head. We printed out a practice exam from her teacher that I want her to try to finish in 50 minutes. This will model the actual time limit on her exam and hopefully give her a better idea of the pace she needs to maintain. I also mentioned to her that exams don't need to be worked through in the order given. Jumping around to finish off the easy ones first is a great strategy. I'll grade and discuss the exam with her on Tuesday.

The student did extremely well on her ACT homework, scoring 27 in Science, 31 in English, and 35 in Math! We ran an abridged ACT today with all four multiple-choice sections; she boosted her Science to 28 and maintained high English, Math, and Reading scores. I have assigned a full-length ACT (including Writing) for our final session next week.

Tutoring review by Jerilynn in Mounds View, MN
We started reviewing the previous chapter tests beginning with the most recent since we were reviewing topics from the beginning of the semester previously. We reviewed what the integral of a function means in terms of a graph and how to calculate just from the graph without knowing the function. We went through how to set up the equations from a related rates word problem and then solved it. We also reviewed linearization to approximate the value of a function at a specific point. Lastly, we started looking at Newton's method for approximating the value of a function.
