Tutoring review by Erik in Manville, NJ
Today we talked about relationship two lines have that make them perpendicular. The student was having a little difficulty calculating the slopes of lines correctly, making small mistakes when keeping track of minus signs. We made sure to be careful when writing our equations down, and then saw how to check the graph to see that our answer makes sense. He was having trouble remembering how to write linear equations in slope-intercept and slope-point form so we went back and reviewed that so he would be prepared for the unit test. He said he will take the unit test tomorrow so we can start the next unit together on Thursday. At the end, he took a test on the material and scored 10/10, just like he did last week.

Today we talked about the difficulties of studying and how to overcome the feelings associated with performing negatively on practice tests. The student is a good student and the ways in which we are studying are new and sometimes overwhelming to him, but I encourage him to push through and build up his mental endurance as this will serve to help him in many ways in the future. We also talked about him sending me 5 problem types he's comfortable with and 5 problem types he finds challenging in order to build up some practice every day this week with some focused worksheets.

In this session with the student, we did the new statistics assignment she got from school. She's just started with statistics in school and this assignment covered the very basics of it: a few definitions and the different forms of averages. We discussed the definitions and then moved over to the mathematics part. Most of the problems involved mean, mode, and median. I taught her the different techniques to answering those questions along with their significance. Overall, it was a fruitful session.

The student and I covered the following topics from his assignment, including but not limited to: Grade 5 Math: finding the Greatest Common Factor for a pair of numbers using the prime factorization method, finding the Least Common Multiple for a pair of numbers using the prime factorization method, as well as working with powers and exponents. The student was cooperative throughout the session. We then worked out exponents up to the sixth power for using the numbers 2-6 as the base.

The student had difficulty with one homework problem, which we reviewed. We then worked Problem set 19 doing the evens, and I answered any questions as we worked. We also watched the video for Lesson 20, which is entitled Simplification of Radicals and Lines Parallel to a Given Line. After this, we began the practice problems. The homework assigned was Problem set 19, odd #'s.

The student and I worked on a major component of the Calculus AB component: sketching graphs using the derivative tests. Due to the length of each problem, we solved one together, with her directing and me acting as scribe. Then, she completed three of her four homework problems successfully. We tied any loose ends. On a separate note, she expressed confidence in her performance on her previous test.
