The topics we covered included working with similar triangles and calculating the ratio of similar shapes in terms of length of sides, area, and volume. The student needed additional assistance understanding the connection between the different ratios, but quickly picked up the subject with assistance. I assisted the student with her geometry homework, which was about ratios and proportions. I guided her through her worksheet and double-checked her work. We spent a good deal of time with long division and long multiplication, since she had not done these for a while, and with setting up the proportions correctly. I guided her through the long multiplication and long division and let her know when and why her proportions were incorrectly set up.

The student and I reviewed the revolution of solids about a given axis. This includes determining the radius according to the axis of revolution, determining the limits of the interval and the appropriate formula to evaluate. She had a good understanding of that we discussed.

We began the session today with the student's favorite subject, math. He is very good at math because he is able to perform most of the operations in his head and is not afraid to find the right answer to the question. He did well with the equations but had difficulties with word problems. After working on math, we began to work on reading. We read two selections. While reading this selections, he picked out words he did not know and underlined them. I also had him select the facts that were in the readings. After we worked on reading for about 45 minutes we began to work on writing. I am thinking for the next couple of sessions we are going to focus on reading and writing.

For this session, the student first worked on her homework. Her class has just started a new topic which includes algebraic expressions and solving them in word problems. In addition, this included writing algebraic expressions in different formats. For example, 4x - 12 is equivalent to 4(x - 3). She had a bit of trouble setting up a couple of them using variables, but once the expression was set up she had no problem plugging in values and finding the solutions. Once her homework was complete, I gave her a practice worksheet based on her homework. She did fine, and only had a couple minor errors that were easily fixed. She let me know what she did and didn't understand, which I appreciated so I can prepare for the next session.
