Tutoring review by Christian in Hasbrouck Heights, NJ
The student and I hadn't met in over a week since she had been on vacation. She had told me that her teacher was planning a quiz on linear approximations but she wasn't sure what that meant. I explained to her what it was and she said she didn't remember whether or not she had done it before so we started from the ground up. I came up with an example problem for her to solve where I had her calculate the value of a function at two points near to each other as well as the linear approximation of those points. Then I had her evaluate the function far from those points and approximate it again to show her the limitations of the method. Finally I had her graph the function and its linear approximation to further cement in her mind what our goal was. After some additional practice she became good at it. Finally we started reviewing long response questions from the AP test.

The student and I started the session with the sight card flashcards. She read her book aloud by herself. Then, we did choral reading together and then she read by herself again. She did much better after the third time. She read her "Luka Plays Baseball" book and answered some comprehension questions. She had a hard time answering the question, so I had to ask her other questions to help her support and come to her answer of the comprehension question. She wrote her spelling words in rainbow colors. To finish, we went over the sight card flashcards again. She got the words down much better the second time.

We went over the slope equation (y=mx+b) as well as graphing these equations. I showed the student strategies such as rise over run to help her graph the equations better. I also showed her when a negative answer will change to a positive and vice versa when using multiplication and division.

The student was concluding his midterm exam preparation, and we completed some review problems on work, energy, torque, and rotational kinematics. He seemed to be getting a good grasp on these topics, completing many of the problems himself with minimal input from me. We mainly worked on the problems with torque and balancing.

The student and I went over grammar, reading comprehension, and math. He and I started working on parts of speech. He knew nouns, verbs, and adjectives. We went over the rest and worked on memorizing the function of them. His reading comprehension has been greatly improved. In math, we worked on working with decimals. We did adding, subtracting, and multiplication with decimals. He has a good understanding of the material and had a lot of fun doing it.

Today the student and I reviewed periodic data, finding the amplitude and midline of a periodic function, and measuring angles in standard form. I also introduced him to converting radians to degrees and degrees to radians. He had an excellent understanding of the materials covered.
