Tutoring review by Greg in Ewing, NJ
The student is working through his pre calculus book on his own. He wanted to meet every 2 weeks, but asked to move our meeting back a week, as he was feeling comfortable so far without one on one help. We met and talked over what things he had been working on. I asked if there were any areas that he was having trouble. It seems like he is able to find resources when he does get stuck on a problem for how to figure it out. I'm very encouraged by his ability to learn from his mistakes. He checks his answers against the book, and when he gets one wrong, he's very quick in identifying what went wrong and why. He did have some questions for me about the rules of roots and exponents. We found that his book actually has an entire appendix on the foundational rules of algebra. We spent about an hour and a half walking through this section of the book. This covered things ranging from domain/range to real numbers to the definitions of absolute value to the definitions of distributive property and binomials to the rules of exponents and roots. He says that he finds that most of his errors come from having a rusty algebra foundation. If he really wants to prepare himself for taking college level calculus, this will be very important in improving his confidence. We decided to meet in 3 weeks time to check in on his progress. I told him to shoot me an email at any time if there's something he's struggling with, and I'll point him towards online resources if I can.

Today we went over how to convert x scores to z scores in Excel as well as how to calculate the correlation coefficient in Excel. We discussed what these tests mean conceptually as well as what the difference is between descriptive stats (mean, median, mode etc.) and inferential stats in terms of the student's report that she has to write.

Tutoring review by Steven in Ewing, NJ
This session was entirely focused on chemistry, specifically review of chapters that we had not covered on Sunday. First we went through different chemical reactions - predicting whether the reactions would occur and what the products would be. The student seems to have a good understanding of how to determine products, balance equations, etc. The main thing to watch out for is just double checking work to avoid simple mistakes. We also spent a good bit of time working on vocabulary terms from the list of terms to know for each chapter that he couldn't quite remember. A lot of this is simply remembering definitions, so I would recommend making flashcards or even just a list of the terms he's unsure about to have something separate to study from. In general, he continues to have a good grasp of the fundamental chemistry concepts.
