Recent Brentwood Tutoring Session Notes

Tutoring review by Victoria in Brentwood, PA
During this session, we started reviewing for her final, which will take place in a couple of weeks. We started from chapter 1 and reviewed topics such as writing algebraic expressions and equations, writing and solving ratios, identifying properties of integers and whole numbers, and graphing functions from equations. She understood the concepts well, except she still makes small mistakes while working out problems and she still struggles with word problems. I told her to do more practice problems to study and to especially focus on the word problems.

Tutoring review by Julia in Brentwood, PA
The student and I spent our session today studying for his upcoming unit test in History. We picked up on his fourth page of notes, where we had left off previously (on Thursday), and reviewed the rise of Christianity and the fall of the Roman Empire. I was thrilled that the student seems not only interested in the material, but that he has outstanding recall abilities when he is engaged in a way that he can appreciate. On Thursday, we went over 12 factors that contributed to the fall of the Roman Empire, and today, he rattled all 12 back to me with absolutely no difficulty, despite admitting that he hadn't had a chance to review them since our previous session. We also discussed a list of primary documents that were suggested as test prep material by his teacher, and the author and significance of each document. We also identified key points within each document that might isolate the document from the other potential documents, in case his test included identifying the documents by a quoted passage. We concluded with some discussion about The Odyssey, which the student is continuing to read for English, and the prompt that he received for a probable in-class essay which centers around Odysseus' actions on the island of Helios. He seemed comfortable and familiar with either side of the argument, as well as the text, and (again) showed how engaged he was by initiating a comparison between the text and the 1997 movie version, which he happily showed me a scene from to prove his point.

Tutoring review by Alexandra in Brentwood, PA
The student and I continued to work on 5th and 6th grade math concepts. Since her placement exam was today (Tuesday), we focused on practicing with concepts she might see on that exam. I tried to pick problem sets and concepts that were both familiar and unfamiliar to the student. To this end, we covered order of operations problems, setting-up basic expressions using variables, practice with percentages and solving for the variable. She handled these concepts well despite the fact that certain problems (as in solving for the variable) requires skipping many of the logical steps she will encounter as she goes further in her mathematics education. To ensure that the student remained confident about her exam, I broke down problems into short sets of rules (for example, if she sees a variable multiplied by a number, she knows that to get rid of the number, she must do the opposite function - that is, divide). I also talked to the student about test taking strategies - to answer the questions she knows, skip the ones she doesn't and always make sure to keep track of the questions she skips on her answer sheet! I also reaffirmed to her that in the end, this is simply a placement test and while she should always try to do her best and work hard, one placement test will not determine her mathematics future!

Tutoring review by Vincent in Brentwood, PA
Today, we reviewed some of the general principles of factoring quadratic trinomials as well as introduced a new kind of factoring. Initially, he had forgotten the steps necessary to factoring so I briefly reminded him by factoring an example. Afterward, he was able to correctly factor the problems from the work I had given him. Later, we looked at perfect square and difference-of-two-square factoring. This were less difficult for the student and he worked through them quickly. He was even able to use the concept to solve a perfect square trinomial where the variables were replaced with polynomials. Lastly, I introduced him to factoring trinomials where the highest term had a coefficient. He had not seen this before and was unsure how to go about factoring them. I presented a few different methods he could use. Once he understood that, he was able to work through several of the problems using the methods given to him.

We first went over the remaining problems that the student had missed on his packet. Afterwards, I had him complete the assessment that was given about 2 weeks ago. On the first attempt he received a 67%. On the second try he earned a 87%. This is a marked increase and I believe that the student has shown great gains in our sessions.
