Recent Beach Park Tutoring Session Notes

Tutoring review by Erin in Beach Park, IL
The student started the session by asking that we spend 45 min on math, and 45 min on chemistry. In math he was learning about series and sequences. We looked through most of his assignment for the day together. It involved determining a formula for (n) given the first 4-6 terms of the sequence. We discussed (n) and went over a couple of examples. It was part of his assignment, and I was paying attention to the time so we would be able to cover the chemistry questions he had. In chemistry his main question was- what exactly is dipole-dipole bonding? He said he understood the idea of hydrogen bonding so I explained that hydrogen bonding is a specific type of dipole-dipole bonding. I drew a couple pictures to demonstrate what is happening with dipole-dipole bonding. Then we looked at a couple of examples he was uncertain about. Other topics we discussed: how dipole-dipole bonding affects boiling point and vapor pressure, and reading a solubility chart to discuss its application to saturated vs. supersaturated solutions.

Tutoring review by Nathan in Beach Park, IL
The student and I worked on structuring essays and finding the overarching topics behind miscellaneous examples. She did a reasonable job of selecting supporting ideas that didn't overlap, but we spent some time making sure they worked together and actually addressed the topic at hand. Then, we worked on finding the ideas behind specific examples. She would share life examples that seemed to address the topic, but she had some trouble identifying the ideas behind the examples. I directed her to find three different ideas that would support a list of theses. Overall, she's quite bright and has good thoughts; she just needs to work on articulating her thoughts in a way that they address the topic directly.

We went over the subject material of the student's test tomorrow, mainly equalities and inequalities. As in our last session, I stressed to him the importance of slowing down and taking his time. I was really encouraged by his progress from our first meeting; he is solving his problems faster, with more accuracy and greater confidence. I'm really encouraged by his progress so far and I'm confident that his test will go well.

Tutoring review by Tanvi in Beach Park, IL
The student and I talked about his first SAT results and what he had had trouble with. We went over his scores from his first test and he told me that he is hoping for an 1800 when he takes the test in December. We went through a practice SAT that he had. We did 4-5 problems from each of the sections by having him go through them and complete them first and then going through the ones he got wrong together. For our next session, I asked him to complete the test and we could go through it together.

Tutoring review by Steven in Beach Park, IL
The student was preparing for an exam on Newton's laws with inclined planes, friction, and other forces. He was reviewing a wide range of questions, and we focused on organizing information and using diagrams to lay out the force information given in a particular problem. We also covered how to resolve vectors into components using sin and cos, and how to build vectors up using the Pythagorean theorem and tan. He seemed to take some of the ideas to heart, and was rather better able to take in information at the end of the session than the beginning.

The student and I met today to work on an outline for one of her upcoming communications presentations. Together we determined what types of information she will need to cover for each of the sections that she has been assigned, and where to find some of the data that should be included. We also brainstormed some ideas about possible campaign ideas for the product and the types of narrative that could be utilized.
