Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"We reviewed the student's math homework, and then moved on to some social studies. He completed both the assignments."
"We began the session by working with graphing and understanding coordinates. The student was given some coordinates and had to graph the coordinates and analyze the graph. He did well with this. I think he may have missed the lesson on learning the equation for a line: y=mx+b. I taught him what slope is and I tried to teach him what a variable is. This often takes a long time to comprehend--how a letter can actually represent different numbers. I slowly worked through different examples of how to turn a line on a graph into a formula. I felt like we made good progress. Finally, we ended with recognizing trends on graphs. We talked a bit more about slope. Overall, it was a very good session."
"We reviewed the general knowledge math packets that the student had (3 packets with 45 questions in each one) ."
"The student needed support with word problems in an extra practice packet her teacher provided. She uses the UPSCheck problem-solving strategy, so we used it to dissect the problems. I encouraged her to read the problem sentence by sentence instead of reading the entire problem at once. I also advised her to write down the question to be answered, to draw pictures to represent the problems, and to identify key signal words (i.e., operation words). Her long division and multiplication skills are intact, and she remembered to write her final answer in sentence format with the correct units of measurement as her teacher suggested. She needs some additional practice on equivalent fractions and decimals and place value in word problem format. She was very attentive and engaged during the session and wrote down each part of the strategy. Although she needed a little guidance with knowing how to check her answers, she seemed to understand when we did so for a problem answer."
"Today, Student 1 worked on multiplying and dividing polynomials. He did brilliantly on his exercises. Student 2 had practice on orthocenter and incenter. She is doing better."
"In our first session, the student and I reviewed three packets in preparation for his upcoming advanced algebra midterm. We practiced and reviewed exponential growth and decay, systems of equations, compound inequalities, graphing skills, and other topics."
