Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"The student is a great student and her skills are very strong for a beginner. Unfortunately, I overestimated what any beginner, even with her abilities, is capable of. The story we have been working on for the past two weeks is too difficult. I put it together thinking we would advance gradually, adding new material and vocabulary as we went along, but that is not working in actual practice. For next time, we will be dialing back into some simpler material, which will be, I think, more appropriate for a first year student at her age."
"We first practiced Pinyin chart and 4 tones, and then we reviewed the vocab from the last session. The student has now improved a lot on saying the Pinyin individually by himself, his 4 tones have also improved, but he still struggles to combine them together when they're used in words, so we spent a lot of time dealing with the saying of words. Then we moved on to his class assignment, and I helped him finished his homework, and then we did the grammar exercise together. Next time I should check his finished product and help him only with the ones he has difficulties with. "
"We recorded a couple of videos with the student reviewing his body parts vocab and introducing his family members from pictures. He did a great job and loved the activity. We then learned days of the week on his I-pad."
"We reviewed all 6 person pronouns, as well as all known verbs and basic predicates and all known animal words. We reviewed asking age, all known family members and practice addressing siblings with ranking, and the 12 months. Lastly, we reviewed Lesson 6 vocabulary and text, practice asking and answering simple questions."
"We reviewed the student's new vocabulary words - starting from both Chinese characters and pronunciation/meaning, and practiced to read from the characters. We started practicing conversation with normal speech speed."
"We reviewed what we learned last time, and I asked the student to combine numbers, colors, location words, and pronouns together to make longer sentences. We also learned how to say May/Can I..., I need (to)..., I want (to)... and bathroom."
