We read a passage about Norse mythology this evening. We read it through twice, once slowly, and once more for comprehension. He tends to skip over words when he reads too quickly, so I encouraged him again to take a small pause between his words. We then drew a picture for each section of the passage. This will help him develop the ability to visualize what he is reading, which will help him comprehend and remember what he reads. We answered some questions about the story, and he knew all of the answers! He is improving, and we will keep working towards even better comprehension!

This session focused on reading self-monitoring and reading comprehension skills. We read fiction and nonfiction books and focused on different skills for each. With the nonfiction text, we practiced asking questions using the table of contents and retelling the text to include only the important details from each section. I noticed that the student hit some snags with some of the onset letter clusters with a few of the words. With the fiction texts, we continued working on self-monitoring from our last session, but also practiced making connections and reading with expression to make the text for meaningful. She did pretty well with the overall comprehension, but we are still working on self-monitoring and reading fluently. We will continue working on these skills during our next session. I left some books for her to practice reading until then.

The student had to fill in the blanks of a story using a word bank of sight words. She completed it correctly and also related the story to her own experiences and preferences. Then she showed me her worksheet in which she had to capitalize sentences. She did it really well too, and I gave her a similar exercise for homework, this time involving capitalizing names. Afterwards, she completed a worksheet regarding the days of the week, and then we played a game in which she had to identify the words. I gave her another days of the week worksheet for homework. We need to work on a few things: building her vocabulary (which in turn will give her more confidence when reading), learning how to pronounce certain sounds (ch, ng, ie, ght, etc.), and helping her understand the basics of grammar (capital letters, punctuation marks, etc.).

The student's second session went very well. She was able to complete all the work she had set aside for our appointment. We worked on reading comprehension, oral reading, writing, proofreading, and editing of her assignments for the book "Class Matters." I also assisted her with a shorter assignment from her general reading textbook involving categorization of items by type in lists. I was impressed that she had used her planner to write down her assignments, and that she had reserved a quiet study room in the library in advance of the session. Because she was prepared, we accomplished a lot. Her writing improves as she proofreads it slowly and deliberately, and takes the time to fix spelling errors. Good work today.

Today I showed the student annotation symbols to use during his reading. I had him draw each symbol in his journal and label them as well. These symbols included main idea; this surprised me; I don't understand; I have a question/I'm confused; important detail; and predict/infer/conclude. We then read a short story, and I had him mark it with his annotation symbols. He did well identifying most of the symbols while reading. We then addressed each one. Next, I reviewed subtracting fractions, per the parents. We went over the basics of fractions, how to simplify and how to subtract when whole numbers are with a fraction. I definitely make an effort to make the lessons interesting by varying lessons, using color, using humor, etc.

This was a pretty great session! The student was on point and focused throughout the lesson. Her reading comprehension is really excellent and she really works at reading through her material carefully. Her book review of the "Series of Unfortunate Events" was funny and engaging, and I think it might be fun to create a blog of her reviews as an ongoing project.
