Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"During this session, we went over recombinant DNA and then started on specifics on eukaryotic transcription and translation. The student has a good understanding on recombinant DNA involving bacteria and we mainly covered specific vocabulary and steps. We created a helpful mnemonic for why recombinant DNA occurs--CRAIV. While recombinant DNA went smoothly, we ran into a little more trouble with eukaryotic transcription and translation. There were obviously some concepts that the student was not grasping, and she also began to lose focus at certain points. I could tell she did not find this section as interesting. For the next session, I will provide some flashcards with terms and their corresponding definitions and also some outside material to help elucidate the more challenging aspects of eukaryotic translation. The main thing is to keep her interest and focus on the material at hand. I am very pleased at the mnemonic and I hope to cover more ground on Monday."
"I met with the student for two consecutive sessions yesterday, where we went over all of the material for Module 4 of his exam. The concepts covered were genetic linkage, specifics on translation, as well as the degeneracy of the genetic code and its relation to genetic mutations."
"I prepared a practice exam for the student to take before her exam on Monday. It covered the cell cycle, meiosis, and mendelian genetics. After the exam, we focused on pedigrees and the progression of chromosomes throughout the cell cycle."
"I went through the difference between mitosis and meiosis, as the student needed more clarification. I then implemented the concept of balanced vs. unbalanced chromosomal abnormality. We talked extensively about the difference between reciprocal translocation and Robertsonian translocation (and the difference between translocation and recombination in meiosis). We talked about cytogenetic methodologies, specifically CGH hybridization, G-staining, FISH, and spectral karyotyping. He said he felt much better about the material after our session."
"I worked with the student to help her complete a review of her online homework assignment. She had a reading assignment for Chapter 3 and her online "Mastering Biology" homework was given with 38 total sections. Each section had its own information to process whether via diagram, script, or video. She scored about a 90% on the entire assignment."
"In our final two sessions, the student and I tried to review the most challenging topics from her yearlong biology course. For the most part, these were the topics that involved a lot of memorization or were ones that she learned very early in the year and just needed a refresher on. When I left she had a thorough study guide to review from and it is my hope that she will feel confident going into the exam tomorrow."
