We've had the BEST experience with VT! Our tutor has helped my middle schoolers math grades come up from a D to an A for our 8th grader. and from a D to a B for my 6th grader. I'm beyond pleased with how she connected with my boys.

Today the student and I focused on graphing. We reviewed and graphed linear equations and inequalities. We also discussed calculating slope from graphs and some systems of equations. I also walked her through how to use her knowledge of median and range to create box and whisker plots.

We reviewed her homework packet, which consisted of spelling and math. The student did great with the word problems she was assigned, and used the strategies she was taught to solve them. We also discussed previous assignments she had already completed.

Trigonometry Tutoring review by James in Hobart, IN
The student showed significant improvement between last Thursday and today. We reviewed adding, subtracting, multiplying, and dividing of variables. She understands most of it as we work, but as is sometimes the case, she forgets some of the basics when we move on to another topic. We then moved onto one-step and two-step equations for solving variables using the railroad tracks method. She already had a grasp on this from her own classwork, so I didn't have to teach her much, except for when there were fractions involved instead of integers and decimals. She still seems to be confused when looking at fractions, believing that they are a completely different issue, and is still unable to treat fractions as if they are simple numbers. So while she knows what to do with x+5=8 with ease, x+1/2=3/4 confuses her. The same with 2x=4 vs. (1/2) x = 4. Today I did teach her how to find the reciprocal of a fraction so that she can multiply both sides by the reciprocal. At the end of the lesson, I added in a second variable y, and I started trying to teach her how to isolate y.

Trigonometry Tutoring review by Phil in Hobart, IN
This was a good session with the student. We discussed circles for geometry and how to use "shape arithmetic" to get the areas of complex compositions of figures. For Algebra, we looked at some min/max linear equations and relationships. We also looked at some SAT practice questions once we were done with homework sets.
