Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"Today, the student and I had our 5th session. We focused on science and English. He had taken a science diagnostic test since our last session, and we reviewed it before proceeding with new material. We focused on basic physics concepts and equations that he would likely see on the test but hasn't learned in school yet. After completing science, he took an English practice test and aced it. For next session, he is going to complete a math diagnostic test. Additionally, he is going to prepare any other questions he has related to the ACT, as our next session will be our last before he takes it."
"We went over the last of the math ACT concepts and started on the actual ACT questions. The student seemed to understand most of the material, but struggled with some application. He just needs a little more practice."
"We reviewed through a grid-in math section, where the student breezed through, only needing some prodding on some of the most difficult problems. With continued practice on his own in practice math sections, he should get a great math score. His weakest area is in critical reading, especially with the longer passages. We decided that he should skim the articles more so that he can get to the questions more quickly. After some practice, he became much better at utilizing direct contextual support, rather than any reading between the lines, for his answer choices. He should also continue to review difficult vocabulary. We finished off with some sentence completion problems and a short section of writing. He has virtually no issue with the writing section; he should just continue to practice to pick up on any of the more subtle errors. We will focus on the essay next week."
"The student and I went over vocabulary, analogy, and critical reading problems in preparation for the SSAT. He is making excellent progress with his new vocabulary book and has a good attitude about keeping up his studies. He should continue working on expanding his vocabulary."
"The student and I worked on mathematics for the SSAT. We worked through a practice test. We spent time looking at slope, algebraic word problems, and geometry. He needs to work on memorization of algebraic and geometric formulas. We will meet again next week as he continues to practice math problems."
"The student and I worked on reading and interpreting the text exercises. We reviewed a few short tests he completed on the portal, and then, we read an article by Langston Hughes and had a discussion of what he meant throughout the passage. I asked him several questions about details that weren't in the text but that could be interpreted from Hughes' writing different details, and we talked about how the time period directly effected the passage."
