Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"He had a very good tutoring session. He is a pleasant and bright young man. We started the session with Vocabulary review and introducing new vocabulary words. He completed an English ACT exam section and reviewed nouns, pronouns, and verbs. He completed several ACT Math problems. He did well on a majority of them but was over thinking several of the problems he had difficulty with. In the science portion, he completed 20 questions. We reviewed POE and triage strategies."
"We worked through timed reading comprehension passages. We also worked through a science section together and part of a section timed. We will do less work on science sections in the future as she was especially adept at them."
"The student took some practice tests and we went over some of the material that she had prepared. We focused today on the English section and went over the problems that she missed and clarified the various grammar, syntactical, semantical, stylistic, and thematic reasons why each answer was best. The point that we talked about the most was how to look at a problem and realize what the test makers are asking us -- punctuation, wordiness, context, definitions, proper word use-- so that we can more precisely turn our focus to the differences in the answer choices to discover which answer is best. I think that this technique will work very well for her."
"Today, the student and I discussed all of the sections of the ACT, and she went through diagnostics in science and English. She scored very well on the diagnostics, and it seems that the focus of her studying should be on the math and reading sections. We worked on developing her notes and references for the tests, and I've encouraged her to continue developing those and to study for the test daily."
"Today, the student and I first covered a small Reading passage that he did well on, missing 0 problems. After this, we discussed some strategy for the English section and did a practice test. After this, we corrected his incorrect answers and did some individual problems."
"Today, the student and I focused on finishing up the math portion of the ACT. We focused on plane geometry concepts (areas, perimeters, angle translations), coordinate geometry concepts (inequalities, slope-intercept form), and trigonometry concepts (SOHCAHTOA, graphs of trig functions). In the last half hour of the session, we did practice problems. He was very responsive to what I told him, and answered the practice problems quickly and correctly most of the time. Next week we plan on working on the English portion of the ACT. Until then, I told him to work on some mathematics practice problems."
