Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"We started with 15 questions as a warmup. Then, I had the student complete one practice section of the SAT, followed by a practice essay and two more practice sections. This gave us a complete score for one simulated SAT, based on his scores from our previous session. He scored in the mid-500's. I showed him the average scores for admittance to UM and MIT, his two target schools. These scores are higher than his score currently, so we have some more work to do. I recognized that he tends to finish with time left over, but that he has some problems with the reading comprehension questions. Therefore, I recommended that he use that extra time to read the passages fully, then answer the questions."
"The student and I worked through flashcards for one of the SAT math diagnostic tests together. Most of the problems were incredibly easy for him, although we got tripped up on one particularly difficult geometry problem involving the volume of a cube inscribed in a sphere. We eventually made sense of the explanation for the problem, but returned to it again at the end of the test to clarify the process so that he will be prepared for any similar problems that appear on the SAT. We reviewed a new pack of SAT vocabulary, which he committed to memory very quickly. We put our exercise to the test with some more critical reading practice, which he passed with flying colors! He also mentioned that he is currently getting a lot of timed short-form essay writing practice in school to supplement our preparation for the writing portion of the SAT."
"We covered more SAT Math, going over more strategies including when to plug in numbers, and how to recognize the types of problems that show up again and again in SAT Math. The student seems to be doing well, and I look forward to seeing if he applies what he is learning on the practice tests."
