"Yesterday, the student and I worked on her "magic number" worksheet, which tested number sense by giving clues for a certain unknown number. We then did a division worksheet because we have never done division together before, and she seemed to get the basic concept. I then asked her to complete a worksheet guessing which operation would be appropriate for a certain equation. Then we played a game based on this concept, and she excelled at it!"
"Today the student and I worked on his math, reading, and spelling homework. We began with math, which involved adding and simplifying fractions. He seemed very comfortable with these problems and finished his work with little difficulty. The one thing he did find a little confusing was simplifying improper fractions, so we spent a little extra time working on these types of problems. After taking some time to address this specific area, he seemed to pick it up pretty well and was solving problems on his own with ease. We then moved on to reading, which, as in previous weeks, involved defining vocabulary words, writing a sentence using these words, and then copying down the sentence from the book that contained the word. As he has done before, he picked out some really interesting and difficult words. This made it a little tough for him to think up sentences, but it also allowed us to talk about different parts of speech and how adding a suffix can change a word from an adjective to a noun, or a verb to an adverb, etc. This segued nicely into his spelling homework, as this week's words all had the suffix -tion or -ness. He was able to write some very interesting sentences with his vocabulary words, and he had very little trouble with his spelling homework. Overall this was a very good session, and I think his ability and confidence in his ability are both improving."
"The student had a big packet of homework to work on. I double checked the work she had done before our meeting, then we moved forward in the packet. The packet dealt mostly with multiplying fractions. Initially, the multi-step problems were a little bit confusing for her until I provided some kind of visual to help her see what was being asked of her. She's doing really well with the concepts as long as she thinks through what she needs to do. She was a little bit daunted with the amount of math she needed to do overall, but I think she is doing great and I don't have any specific concerns right now."
"This session was all about preparing for the student's curriculum based assessment. We worked a few worksheets on word problems containing fractions. We were able to reserve a room in the library with a dry erase board, and I feel it was very helpful in illustrating core concepts to him."
"On Monday I had my first session with this student. She worked on her homework from her math workbook. The focus was on numbers and shape patterns. Throughout the lesson, we touched upon other skills like odd/ even numbers, place value, multiplication, subtraction, and addition. Also, we spoke about test-taking strategies and the importance of showing your work/ thinking to help arrive at the correct answer. She did a great job and was very motivated. I look forward to working with her again."
"I checked over the student's homework. He did well. I had him go through multiplication flashcards and had him do a couple of sheets in his book. He got some good work done today."
