Tigard, OR Reading tutoring
The student and I started with reading his Star Wars book. He is so interested in this stuff, and what I love to see is the student reading and interested. I think that is what matters. We also did some exercises in a Star Wars activity book that he has. These were mainly maze games and word jumble games. I then had him read me a passage about ants, which he'd been given for homework a while back and had not done. He read well, and he answered the questions well. The student's issue is that he perceives an assignment to be to difficult -when it is really not - if it isn't explained properly to him. I spoke with his teacher about this, so now we are now all on the same page.

Today we worked on a five paragraph essay the student needs to complete for class. Using his notes, we created a basic outline. Then he read through his research material, identifying which information could be used for what paragraphs. To facilitate the process, I typed it in Google Drive while he dictated it to me. He had good sentence structure and organization of ideas. We completed two paragraphs of the body of the essay and the rest he will complete at home.

The student did great work. Both of his cold reads were over 110 WPM and both of his hot reads were over 140 WPM. He read all of his sight words (500 words) in 7 minutes and was able to start working on a little bit of a "research" report about Pokemon. We talked about how this report can't include opinions, just facts. The student referenced his book in order to do this, which is a great skill to have. We will continue working on his report next time.

The student and I are just about done with "Night," discussing developments, character analysis, symbolic scenes, etc. We're also developing thesis statements around the major points in the book as practice for when she ultimately takes courses that require these steps. The student also spent some time on the ACT English practice guide. She is a very smart girl, grasps themes and writer intentions quickly, and has the beginnings of becoming a very good writer.

Today we started off with a game that reviewed the vocabulary and spelling words we have been compiling a list of throughout the student's readings over the course of the past few weeks. The game was a memory game that had him write each of six selected words on twelve cards (two times for each word), and then see how quickly he could find the pairs. We ran through the initial round two times before I selected 8 more challenging words to play the game with again. The aim of this activity was to test his retention of certain words that had challenged his abilities to read fluently. After this, he read for 20 minutes out of a book about caves and the science behind them. He finished three chapters of this before we ended for the day.

Since this was our last session, I gave her a series of reading assessments to see her progress over our time together. I will email the parents tomorrow with a summary of her progress. She did so well and I was so happy for that!
