Session Summaries by Latin Tutors

Tigard, OR Latin tutoring
Today, the student and I focused on reviewing vocabulary sheets. We have categorized vocabulary terms into different groups based on likeness or pronunciation. After testing his vocabulary knowledge, we marked the terms that need further review. We then moved on to practicing new verb sheets and incorporating the different conjugations into our translation exercises. We reviewed verbs such as entender, comprender, and trabajar. For homework, he is going to review his latest verb sheets so that we can incorporate the new words into our translations. Additionally, we engaged in short Spanish conversation where I provided corrections when necessary.

Today, we reviewed preterite, imperfect, and future tenses. We went over all of the vocabulary in unit 4, and wrote our sentences for words that she had trouble remembering. We also reviewed the irregular future verbs and did multiple practice problems. Next time, we will work on the speaking appointment for unit 4 and move into unit 5.

Today, we reviewed the concepts covered in the first session, such as conversational introductions, common responses to greetings, articles, making adjectives agree in gender and number, and the verb SER. Today, I introduced the student to the difference between SER and ESTAR more in depth, and I will provide even more examples next time. He also learned the verb TENER (to have) and was rather easily able to translate a few basic sentences from English to Spanish. He also reviewed Spanish letter names as well as the numbers 1-12. He is grasping concepts very quickly and seems motivated to work and study on his own.

Today, we reviewed the student's corrections to her writing from last week, and then we went over her homework writing assignment together, correcting each sentence as we went. She's getting better at noun-adjective agreement and generally getting better with subject-verb agreement. The bulk of the lesson was dedicated to an introduction of the difference between ser and estar and then a longer explanation of direct and indirect object pronouns and the sentences that they show up in. We talked about what they are in English and how that maps onto their Spanish constructions. We translated them and then practiced creating them. At the end, I left her with a logic puzzle that uses both types of sentences. Her homework is to finish the puzzle, summarize another show in Spanish, and continue working on vocabulary.

Today, we spent about half the time analyzing/translating a song and the other half working on some new grammar. We looked at the song "Odio" by Romeo Santos and I had the student translate the parts she was familiar with and I broke down the other parts for her. Then, we talked about locations and some phrases that can be used while shopping. As always, the student asked great questions and provided useful feedback about what is helpful for her learning. We are going to start looking at some opposites in vocab words, like words that come in pairs, because these stick out to her. The student's Spanish pronunciation is improving by leaps and bounds every time we meet!
