Session Summaries by Chemistry Tutors

Tigard, OR Chemistry tutoring
We covered electrochemistry, including galvanic cells, determining which of two reactions half cells end up the cathode and anode, using the Nernst equation to find out the change in voltage with concentration for a given reaction, and using the Gibbs free energy equation to determine the free energy of a cell from its potential in volts. We also used the Gibb's-Nernst modified equation to determine the concentrations in a cell that was not at standard state. Our next session Friday will be to cover any new material, and our last session will be the following Tuesday since the student's final exam in the course will be the following day.

We covered electron configurations, valence electrons, and Lewis dot structures. The student was struggling with applying Lewis dot structures to compounds, and she wants to cover Lewis dot structures for polyatomic ions next. The student was very attentive to the material and seems to want to do quite well.

We covered how to write neutral formulas for ionic compounds, electron configurations, orbital theory, and the three rules for filling out electron configurations (Hund's rule, the Aufbau principle, and the Pauli exclusion principle). We also went over the student's last chemistry test. Some of the points she got marked off were due to not showing work exactly the way the teacher wanted. Other points were marked off more for conceptual reasons, so I worked with her on those.

We covered mostly math today, as the student wanted to make sure he does well in the final. We went over trigonometry today, going over identities and simplifying expressions. He is solid in his approach to problems. I recommended that he practice more to improve his accuracy. We decided that it would be a good idea to memorize the trig identities so that next time, we don't have to look them up all the time. We will reconnect back with chemistry next time.
