Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"We briefly reviewed the student's SAT scores. I had the student run through a practice SAT math exam; we started by discussing some SAT math "strategies" to shorten the time needed to solve questions. Student did a great job with the math. Noted several areas for improvement, specifically geometry, functions, and "higher" algebra. Next, we worked through portions of a practice SAT test. Subsequent sessions: keep up with the math, since the student intends to study chemical engineering, but really focus on the writing."
"We worked on grammar and critical reading. His main stumbling block remains the test itself--the way the questions are asked and how to read the answers is still a problem for him. This is something we need to look at closely in the next few weeks. As always, he puts in his best effort."
"We reviewed through math strategy and continued on with the content (coordinate geometry, functions, circle sectors, ratios, sequences, and more). The student handled these with relative ease and only erred on the most difficult problems. He also handled the practice math section from the SAT guide very well. We wrapped things up with a slew of sentence completion problems from critical reading. He did well here as well, only tripping up on the most difficult vocabulary words. I recommended that he, on a continuous basis, review through SAT vocabulary. He should do a practice section of math and/or writing on his own."
"The student had taken her test. We discussed test zone strategies. We worked on math practice problems, such as common base problems, substitution, and exponential rules. Overall, she understood the concepts and was able to apply them. Her next assignment is another test and we will review difficult problems during our next session."
"The student has improved significantly in math. I am pleased to see his growth over the past few weeks. We worked on math sections that he caught up very easily and on pace. There were a few challenging problems, but he managed to find his footing and work on them diligently."
"The student has made significant progress. Annotating has helped him understand how to really read for meaning and the relationship of ideas throughout passages. On his last practice test, he got 39/52 correct answers (vs. the 30/52 he initially got). His weak point is still vocabulary, so I'm glad he is getting a vocab flashcard set to help him out. I'm looking forward to the next lesson, in which we're going over the third practice test. The third test is a little harder to do, but we will see how well he does."
