Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"The student and I concentrated on Critical Reading today. We went through several practice problems as well as her diagnostic test. She and I formulated strategies for each specific question type, and I asked her to use those notes to complete a CR section on her own for next time."
"Assessed student background: strengths/preferences/weaknesses, etc. Reviewed test strategies and ~1/3 of PSAT results in detail (Math and English- more English). Created Vocabulary list (will be ongoing)."
"The student has written about most of the topics listed under the entry exam portion of his workbook, so for practice we took a prompt from the admissions test portion. He brainstormed, outlined, wrote, revised and rewrote an essay based on the prompt "Sometimes the results are not what is expected." I also wrote a response to the prompt. I timed us for 30 minutes, and he used up the entire time minus 8 seconds. His use of transitions and his structure were the best components of his essay. We also critiqued each others' essays. Something he can improve is his use of diverse words, but I explained clarity is the most important aspect at this point. Next, we looked at a new list of words and defined them. We also reviewed words from previous sessions. Lastly, he wanted to work on quantitative reasoning. So he completed a practice drill. He struggled with probability but performed well on the other problems."
"The student did well this afternoon. He continues to impress me with his command of vocabulary. The sentences in today's "La publicit?"" translation exercise presented the student with a couple of instances of vocabulary new to him, but, other than that, he pretty smoothly and efficiently churned out the translation. The student does continue to struggle with translation that results in authentic French as opposed to English simply masquerading as French, but he is improving on that front, and improvement is all I ask, that and that he always do his best, which the student has always been terrific about doing. Thanks for your great work this afternoon."
"The student gave me a site with practice problems through his college to work on today. We also covered some midpoint problems through a problem bank. We discussed the midpoint formula, quadratic formula, simplifying square roots, cross multiplying polynomials, and order of operations. He is a fast learner and worked well despite not having math for so many years. He had the most trouble with algebra topics like solving equations and factoring, but he quickly remembered the rules and tips I gave him. He agreed to work on more practice problems and to email me later today if he needs help again; we may have another session tonight."
"The student got a new book with a diagnostic test, of which she took the timed verbal portion. I took the book with me to grade and prepare a plan of study based on her strengths and weaknesses. During the other time, we reviewed conversions, corrected our homework from last time, and introduced factoring binomials. I gave her homework to reinforce all the concepts reviewed and introduced."
