Session Summaries by Essay Editing Tutors

Thousand Oaks, CA Essay Editing tutoring
During today's session we worked on phonics and letter/ sound correspondence as well as handwriting and reading. I introduced a new type of modified paper to help the student with his letter formation and he did a great job working with the new format. I introduced a new strategy with him to help him with spacing between letters and words and had him practice putting one finger beside each letter to give the appropriate amount of spacing between letters and he picked up on this strategy very quickly. I think the more he practices he will become comfortable using this strategy. He continues to enjoy using the modified paper and determining which letters go the roof and which go to the basement and is getting better at his letter formation. He enjoys reading the sight word readers and picking out the books he would like to read. I will bring the next level of readers to our next session to introduce him to new books and more challenging reading. I also left a PowerPoint of modified paper for handwriting practice for his parents to use at home for practice as well as in school if needed.

The student has been improving very well! He knew 98% of the sight words I brought today as well as read a new book by himself. He has begun to sound two letters together instead of individually which has been helping him continue to read. I am glad to see such improvement!

The student continued to work on his essay. He was productive and revised the three paragraphs he had written. He does not use punctuation often, but when prompted, he knows where commas should go. The essay is turning out well and he will finish up at the end of the week.

It was my pleasure to meet this student today. We spent the first 10-15 minutes of the session discussing where she is at in school and what her ideal tutoring needs/ goals could be. She was eager to show me some of the books she has been reading (they are many and she is obviously a wonderful reader) as well as tell me about what she is currently doing in her writing class. At this point, I thought it best to "interview" the student and do a fun writing exercise with her. I asked her what she enjoyed about writing and what she found hard. I took notes on these things so that I can use them as learning objectives for future lessons. It seemed her biggest struggle that she communicated was sometimes not having enough material or supporting ideas to finish essays. With that in mind, and also to gauge where she is at as a writer, I gave her a 5-minute freewriting exercise: a way for her to brainstorm ideas on paper without having to worry (yet) about organization or correctness. My hope is that this frees her from having writer's block in the future, while simultaneously generating enough material from the beginning of the writing process to easily complete her essays in the future. She seemed to enjoy the activity and wrote about gymnastics, which also gave us a chance to get to know each other better. I hope this helps her to feel comfortable in our future sessions. I then had her do another type of pre-writing exercise: web brainstorming. This is simply another way to get her ideas on paper and generate possible material and supporting reasons for her future writing assignments. I made the web brainstorming exercise about gymnastics, as well, so that she could see different way to brainstorm about the same topic. I am hoping in the future to help with such things as reading suggestions, vocabulary, and pre-writing/ writing organization. I want to make sure that these sessions are beneficial at helping the student excel and will take stock as we continue in them.

The student was able to explain her invention ("the wolf treadmill") in three complete sentences. Then we read a little bit of Lafcadio and then wrote a short book about games, which she will illustrate at home.
