"The student did great on her SAT practice test. Her essay in particular was strong. I left her with additional tips before the end of the session. I am looking forward to hear how it goes for her!"
"This session we worked on reading and math. We went through three reading passages in different genres to practice summarizing information in each paragraph. I had the student summarize each paragraph to me as she read, which she did quite well. Then she answered the questions using her mental map of the passage to help guide her work. She did very well in all three passages, getting 80-90% every time on her first guesses. We will continue to work on this section so that she can improve her pacing now that her comprehension is at such a higher level. We worked through the first thirty problems of a math section as well. The student recalled all of the geometry and graphing principles we had gone over previously. She got stuck on a couple problems, for which I showed her simpler avenues of finding the answer than the ways she was attempting. Other than that, she answered all questions with 100% accuracy and good pacing. We will work on #31-60 next week. I left her with an essay for homework."
"The student and I worked through a math diagnostic test. This was our first lesson, so I was able to suggest some materials for her to use. She is a determined and focused young girl and wants to see herself do well on the ACT."
"Today, we went over English and science. Specifically, with English, I gave the student problems relating to the usage of commas, semicolons, and colons, as well as verb tense problems which she said she struggled with a little bit on the practice sections she did. With the punctuation, she did need a little help with when to include the correct punctuation in certain questions with dependent and independent clauses, but overall, she is showing great improvement with these questions. We also did some science questions that related to comparing scientists' viewpoints. She said that she had struggled with these in the past, so we did various questions about this and she seemed to do very well. I encouraged her to do more practice tests, so that her timing and test fatigue strategies would be improved for the actual test in two weeks. Overall, it was a very productive session, and I look forward to the next one. Have a great week!!"
"Today, we went over the Math section of the ACT. We spent a really long time on the unit circle and trig functions, which the student hadn't been taught before. This is huge on the ACT, so what she learned today will help her out lots for the ACT. Plus, it'll prepare her for Algebra 2 next year. She, again, was eager and focused. She makes the job very easy."
"Today, we went over the practice test that the student took over the weekend. Then, we talked about strategies for the reading section and went over a practice fiction passage and sample questions for the passage."
