Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"The student understands/knows how to do most of the material that we went over today in Geometry. I think it is a matter of her remembering the rules for fractions and exponents. The best way to do this is through practice. I'm beginning to see why tests may be a little bit of a problem. It's not that she doesn't know the material, it's just that you only get one chance on tests so there is not room to make a mistake. When I tell her a problem is incorrect she usually knows how to fix it, but on a test no one is there to tell her that she made a simple mistake. I had a similar problem when I was in school and it was most pronounced in math where it is easy to make a mistake. Now that I am familiar with the material she is currently learning I will be able to come up with appropriate problems to ask her to make sure she is retaining the material. See you next time!"
"The student and I completed the ACT Mathematics review today by practicing word problems and going over the Trigonometric material for the test. He had no trouble with the trig material at all, as I had expected given his strong math performance overall. Next time we will work through a practice ACT together to get a full diagnosis of problem areas to work on in the next couple weeks."
"The student and I spent most of this session looking through the work that remains to be done for the rest of the year. We created a study plan for each class, and divided up the work into assignments that can be managed within the remaining weeks of the semester. I explained the Accounting 14-1 lesson to her so that she knows how to do the assignment. I also explained how she is to complete the journals for Environmental Systems and the movie assignment for Health. She is to work on Accounting homework before we meet again."
"The student and I again began this session by working on the math section of the test. We reviewed the arithmetic concepts we talked about last session and discussed the algebra concepts that could be covered on the test. I then had her work through some problems in a timed situation to simulate taking the exam. Next, we worked on finding bridges for analogy problems and using the "charge" of a word to help solve the problems. Lastly, we discussed synonym problems by coming up with our own definition first and then comparing that definition to the options provided."
"We covered a general introduction to the GRE and identified areas on which to focus. Most of the 2 hours was spent going over practice Math problems to identify priorities, and which GRE books would be the most useful."
"The student needed help with answering some questions about her opinion. She needed to write a short paragraph for each. She used a variety of tenses and some more complex vocabulary. She challenges herself to use more than just the basic vocabulary and grammar for her work, which is very encouraging."
