Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"The student completed several sections about grammar on and online learning program. He read from Stephen King's book, On Writing. He read a science article from a differentiated reading program. We also reviewed his math homework. He began a biographical sketch about his Dad. The plan is for him to interview his Dad and complete the sketch tomorrow."
"The student has been working hard and has brought her grade up. The most recent section covers odds and probabilities. She is very good with these topics. She is able to reduce fractional answers to simplest forms, which is important for receiving full credit on tests. She had no trouble identifying mutually exclusive from not mutually exclusive events. She correctly applied the addition rule for probabilities with "or" statements and the multiplication rule with "and" statements. She is staying current with all her assignments and quizzes. She is doing a great job."
"The student needed support working through some of her corrections for her packets. We focused first on problems in which she had to set up the equations to word problems, which she was still having difficulty with from the previous session. I encouraged her to write down all of the information she knew from the problem and to cross off the information she used as she set up two different equations. We also came up with similar steps that we used for three different problems to help her remember what to do, including writing variable expressions and identifying two variables when setting up the equations. I had the student explain her thought process throughout each problem and corrected any mistakes she made. I also left some additional practice with her, but these problems also included inequalities. The student also requested to review how to use slope-intercept form to solve for the y-intercept and slope using two given points. She was cooperative and engaged during the session."
"The student needed to do a review of grammar conventions, so we played grammar jeopardy. Her weak point was parts of speech. I charted the 8 parts of speech for her, and we discussed each in detail. She is to work on memorizing them this week and writing authentic examples of each. I will quiz her next week."
"The student said she will have her first test in math on Friday. We went over factoring with prime numbers, adding and subtracting fractions, ordering fractions, converting fractions and decimals. After that review, we discussed plotting coordinates, and the signs associated with the four quadrants. She asked if I would help her with the Periodic Table, so we will discuss that on Monday."
"The student showed improvement in her understanding of conversion. She correctly calculated most of her homework. During this session, we focused on ratios and setting up unit conversion in a more complicated way. She needed help with the simple algebraic concept of solving equations. We did a lot of exercises on solving equations. I gave her more homework problem sets on unit conversions and solving ratios."
