Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"The student completed his English homework. His assignment was to write a short analysis of the symbolism in chapter 5 of The Great Gatsby. He spent a good deal of time reading chapter 5 aloud, stopping at crucial points in the text to discuss symbolism. He made some truly marvelous connections between key points in the text, and by the end of the session, he was more than adequately prepared to finish his short written assignment. I encouraged him to finish his reading before our sessions, so we can spend the time in the session on analysis and writing."
"The student and I spent the session today practicing his reading. We read together the book Beloved, paying special attention to new words and the structure of the narrative. It is my hope that by practicing his reading he will gain a better feel for the way the words are put together, thereby improving his grammar as well. I left him with a few vocabulary words to look up, as his chief problem is his limited vocabulary, especially of idiomatic phrases."
"Tonight the student told me he got a 100 on his quiz last week on the Thoreau essay we discussed in our last session (yay!). Tonight we worked on rewriting an in-class sample SAT essay on nature vs. civilization. He understands in theory how to make an argument and create points, but he says his ideas can get jumbled in his head. I had him write down his ideas when they came to him and to make lists that compared nature and civilization and it seemed like that helped him understand what points he needed to make. He's definitely getting better with his reading comprehension and pulling out ideas in sentences. He has a great attitude and a lot of patience when it comes to the difficult parts of his studies - such a neat kid to work with."
"I helped Student 1 with her homework on the circulatory system and with a Spanish worksheet. I helped Student 2 with math homework, and I read a story to him and helped him form a sentence using "sound spelling." I helped Student 3 with his math homework on multiplication and division."
"I helped the student study for his math test this week by helping him through practice problems that his teacher provided. He seems to be fairly confident with the problems, but he just needs to reinforce some of the strategies that the practice problems require him to use in order to solve them."
"I helped the student with a brochure that she was working on. Her parent and I discussed some things that he wanted to really focus on. He wanted to get to the root of why she was not doing better on her state test in English. He will speak with the teacher and will have more class material to work from. She knew how to structure sentences and wrote pretty decently. Her attitude was positive. She just needs some confidence in clarifying her thoughts on paper."
