Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"Worked on limiting reactant problem for upcoming quiz. Worked on reflection questions from class project."
"We reviewing chemistry concepts that the student was unfamiliar with, such as thermochemistry and stoichiometry."
"We worked on problem set 3. Problem 2 was a Schlosser modification of the Wittig reaction. We worked on the mechanism on the formation of the ylide which then attacks the carbonyl to form the betine intermediate which normally collapses to give the cis product. But further deprotonation of the betine intermediate and reprotonation from the less hinder sides gives the trans product. Problem 3 was a retrosynthetic problem that gave two different products based on the same starting materials. First, we had to complete a retrosynthesis that gave common starting materials and then choose the correct reagents to for path A allow for Ballis HIllman reaction and for path B enamine addition to unsaturated carbonyl. With problem 4 we were required to do a reaction search to find the desired reaction give in the problem we then had to provide the mechanisms of a Michael addition, followed by an azide reduction using phosphine followed by a Aza-Wittig reaction."
"The student and I went over more density problems. We reviewed what we did last time and did about 15 problems to really hammer home manipulating the density formula. We also went over sig figs and units."
"The student and I went over the newest unit of his pre-calc class, piecewise functions. He has a hard time initially conceptualizing a lot of these concepts, but once they are grounded in his mind, he easily forges ahead. By the end of the session, he was working completely independently and getting the problems correct."
"The student and I worked on 2 two-sided systems of equations worksheets; these worksheets were word problems whose information had to be extrapolated into word problems by the student. He understood the concept."
