Test Prep Tutoring review by Esther in Olathe, KS
We reviewed the vocab from the last time we met, which was one month ago. Then we worked on practice writing questions--improving sentences, identifying sentence errors, and improving paragraphs. The student did very well with the easier questions--he was able to hear the errors as he read the sentences. We worked on parallelism and dangling modifiers, and will continue to review the kinds of things he should be looking out for.

Student 1 and Student 2, took some practice exams over the past weekends. We reviewed the math questions that they needed help with. Student 2's performance showed that he needed to learn more about percents and fractions. We also created vocabulary flash cards and practiced how to use them: shuffle cards, try to define the word, if you can't define it, flip over the card, and then use the word in a sentence that provides enough context cues to understand the word with the sentence.

Today, the student and I went over her assigned homework from last time. She did not miss one problem on the scrambled paragraphs, logical reasoning, or reading section. We then finished the test by completing the math portion. She did pretty well on the math section, though she needed help with some of the more advanced problems. We finished off the session with some geometry review assignments.

The student and I focused on the science portion of the ACT. She took a practice test, and I timed how long it took her to read each passage, and to answer each question. Overall, she finished about one minute too long for each passage. However, when analyzing the data, it seemed that almost all of the extra time, and most of the questions she missed, were on the conflicting viewpoints passage. We practiced two conflicting viewpoint passages, and she was able to reduce her time. With a little more help, she should be able to finish the entire science section on time, and increase her accuracy on the conflicting viewpoint passage.

Test Prep Tutoring review by Katie in Olathe, KS
I had asked the student to read some passages and answer questions for homework so while I reviewed those, he completed a practice test on "Identifying Agreement Errors". After seeing the strengths and weaknesses in his passage comprehension, we reviewed the questions together that he answered incorrectly. He asked if we could do some SAT math so we completed the section in his SAT book that does not allow a calculator. Overall, he is strong in math skills but there was some older concepts that he just needed a refresher on. We started doing some calculator allowed problems and his homework is to finish that section and did another verbal passage and questions. He worked very hard throughout the entire session!
